And of course there is Jan 21 1985 cold. So cold the Steam Plant couldn't produce heat.

Winter of 1992 they sent us to class with the wind chill of somewhere around -50. I think the NC legislature passed some sort of weather related law about soon after.

That was 93. I drove back to Boone from Key West and the sun was out. Took a nap and woke up to a pouring snow storm.

That was brutal also. I remember walking to the cafeteria and my eyes were crying it was so cold. It was so cold that even inside you could not keep your food warm enough from the line to the table. I believe they cancelled some classes for at least a day.

Very true. I was still thinking of my freshman year when I typed that.

Winter of '93. We lived over at Village on the Green by the expansive Boone International Airport. My wife and I were born on the coast of NC. Needless to say, we were not prepared. We shared food with other residents in the complex. In some areas of complex walking to another, it was between knee and waist high. Great memories. We had a blast given the two week spring break.

81-85 forget which year. Sparky was the coach. Anyway it started snowing on us at Boone mall, took an hour and a half to get to appartment just past high county condos. Was about 6 inches of snow by the time we made it there

Lived through that one as well. Ran out of salt on campus and the stairs became a great place to watch wipeouts each day

So, can anyone explain the asymmetrical field-facing stairwells? If you look at the cam, on the west side the stairwell column notches into the seats near the top rows. On the east side it does not notch in and it seems to be flush with bottom rows.

Obviously it’s intentional and maybe I’m just a sucker for symmetry but does anyone else feel this “modern” design will look out dated soon enough?

My symmetrical brain is struggling with that look as well...hopefully the finished product will bring everything together a little more though.

Well, I believe it’s because they just haven’t laid the seats yet on the east...

Nope...that is the design. If you take a look at the renderings you'll see the design is basically complete, as we're pretty much done with the concrete risers at this point. If you look at where the seats nearest the cam will install, on the west side, the last/end seats will line up pretty much with a straight down the middle of the sideline view. If you could see the angle on the west side, if the seats were to extend the same way around the stairwell column, you'd basically be up behind the lower east stands and looking straight down the crowd line. In other words, the view/field angle from those seats would be pretty weird. By pushing the stairwell column closer to the east stands/field and up into that space they are able to expand the ground floor on that side, which will be where the weight room and everything team-related will be, giving us as much maximum ground floor space as possible.

Aha. A functional asymmetry. I still think the walkways on either side of the East stands are hideous. If only I had the money I’d donate just to get those redesigned.

Completely agree on the ramps-if I had a couple mil laying around, I’d offer it up to fix it. Maybe I’ll win the lotto one day...

Yeah, I see that now. Looks odd. Does that mean the stairwell is not aligned with the west?

Three and a half feet of snow and a 6:00 pm curfew ordered by the National Guard. We walked to the ATM and a convenience store near the New Market Center for eggs and milk in a whiteout and lived off pancakes for about 4 days until the Lowe’s Foods opened back up.

I noticed a short steel end bracket laying on the ground. I’m guessing that will be added to the right side which will match the one on the left side. There won’t be many rows on that short section just like the left side but at least the stands would be symmetrical and add some more seats. We will see this week.
