MBB: App State @ Coastal Carolina 2 PM Conway, SC TV/ESPN+

Unread post by asu66 » Sat Jan 25, 2020 7:14 am

Oh my, how quickly we fall. From a 2-0 start and an early Sun Belt lead to a downward spiral and a current 4-5 record good only for a three-way tie for *GULP* seventh place with Tx-Arlington and today's opponent--CCU. Today's game marks the start of a tough, three-game road trip. After CCU, the Apps will play at A-State and Little Rock next week.

Road wins in unlikely places suddenly become essential if the good guys expect to climb back into the race. We aren't in it at the moment and CCU is a dangerous team to play on the road with our recent poor shooting and rebounding. CCU won by 17 in Conway last season.

A win today would improve the Apps to .500 (5-5) in conference play heading into the ten-game stretch run to tournament time.

Coastal currently appears in top 50 NCAA statistical categories more frequently than any other sun belt team, although their win/loss record doesn’t seem to keep pace.

What a start. Defense is absolutely on point. Put this one away in the first half boys

Great first half. Defense was fantastic and our three point shooting was great. Hope they can bring it home. Would be a big help to keep pace.

Oh yeah, he can. In fact, he leads his team in shooting percentage at 58.5% on 48 for 82 shooting from the floor. No one's even vaguely close except for a walk-on who's shooting 50%. (The kid has taken two shots and hit one.)

Don't think that Seacat has no ups. He's always in the center circle for game tip-offs and he almost always gets the tip--even against taller opponents. He leads the team in blocked shots and is second only to Isaac in rebounds.

I think “downward spiral” is a bit of an exaggeration. We’ve lost a few while guys have been hurt. Team is clearly improved but not ready to overcome key injuries yet.

Great first half today, but Coastal is throwing haymakers to start the 2nd.

Fair criticism. Maybe "suffering a rough patch" would have been a better choice of words. It's true that we were w/o Isaac in most of those games and w/o Delph and Williams for a game each, as I recall. We still lost five of our last seven including three at home. That's quite a slide. Unfortunately, we lost our grip on the upper tier of the league then.

Winning this one could get our guys back on track. Then if we could win one of two on the Ark trip... (I don't have very high hopes for a "W" in Little Rock.)

I agree with not having “high hopes” at LR, but no one in the Belt is so much better than us that we can’t beat. Great road win today after taking an early second half shot in the mouth. We kept our composure and looked like a team with a plan.

We needed that week off....bad. Ark St will be looking for revenge and Little Rock still looks to take the belt this year, but our guys are resilient.

How about Williams, the smallest guy on the floor, almost getting another double double and leading the team in rebounds again. He has thrived under the new coaching staff.

The CCU cheerleaders seemed to have weathered the escort drama. Pretty handsome group!

Most “complete “ game in recent memory. Looks like Ike is back , as well as our legs on defense. We were tired and beat up ,not making excuses but we looked more like the team that decked ECU and Charlotte today. Let’s sweep Arky State!
