Finish Strong 2 seed possible
Finish Strong 2 seed possible
A 2-4 seed is needed in the Obscure Sun Belt Tourney Format.
Win the next 2 at home and that becomes a real possibility. Georgia State currently in 2nd has a crazy tough final 4 game stretch.
This is the first time in a long time that we have a good shot at the NCAA tourney. Hopefully we can get the students behind the team and have good crowds down the stretch.

College basketball is wide open. Look how many teams nationally have or most likely will have 10 or more losses? I saw today a smaller conference has every school with double digit losses already. ACC on track for probably 11 schools to reach that.

For perspective, we are 12-11, 6-6 Conf. The baby blues are 10-12, 3-8 conf.

Yah these are huge games these next few days. The difference between a Top #4 seed and falling much lower is going to be just a game or two difference.
It's wild to think that at 6-6 a #2 seed is actually within reach even without an act of god.

No matter where we finish, DK has my vote for SBC coach of the year.
Let’s get Dub tonight!
Footnote: I bet the Little Rock coach gets Sunbelt coach of the year honor.

Step one complete. Not exactly a work of art but a win is a win. Especially huge when you consider Forrest was held to single digits. Williams, Ike, and Seacat stepped up in big ways! Way to go guys!

Eh, maybe. We don't match up well with Little Rock or Georgia State. We're playing good ball right now, but we literally almost couldn't miss versus Little Rock and still lost.
Still, very encouraging from Kerns and the players this season. Amazing what happens when a system is tooled for the players rather than beaten into them.

Re: Finish Strong 2 seed possible
I tell my App friends who don't follow the team as closely that it's a good shot this year, but that's relative to what's been almost two decades of really... challenged baseketball.
We know by the end of December if the Sunbelt is going to be a lock for a one bid league. And like usual it's all dependent on winning the conference tournament, which in it's slightly updated format favors the Top seeds even more heavily then in years past (with all the home games, etc). So it's especially nice that this is the first February I can recall where the team is in total control of it's destiny. If App wins out, the team gets the #2 seed. The Texas St & Georgia games will be tough, but not unwinnable. It's a really tough path to the #2 if they're not able to at least split the Georgia series.
If they sit in the #2 seed, that probably puts Georgia Southern in the the #3 spot for the opening game. They've shown they can beat them. Then just one more game against likely UALR or Georgia St. Tough for sure, but not inconceivable.

Biggest game of season coming up against Georgia St. Win keeps things on track, loss makes it very difficult. Team needs a pair of wins to not rely too much on outside help.

Re: Finish Strong 2 seed possible
If he can get a top 4 seed then no doubt Kerns is the SBC COY. I don't see us making the NCAA tourney and I'll be happy to make any tournament after the last few years but I do expect 17 or 18 wins this year. If we can reach that then 20-23 wins should be a legit goal next year.ggasu wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 3:03 pmA 2-4 seed is needed in the Obscure Sun Belt Tourney Format.

Unless we find some post players we aren’t going to be better next year.

Re: Finish Strong 2 seed possible
We do lose three starters off this team. Frankly, Kerns benefitted from a inheriting a veteran squad. The real challenge could be next year. That should not be taken in any way as an intended slight. He has done a remarkable job getting this team to play a solid game of D. I would certainly think he will get some consideration for COY but if LR continues on their pace, their coach will likely take the honors.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2020 12:20 pmIf he can get a top 4 seed then no doubt Kerns is the SBC COY. Re: Finish Strong 2 seed possible
I feel like Kerns has the ability to adapt to different teams with different strengths and weaknesses and not just have the same team every year.
Hustle, going after loose balls and defense are almost universal, so you can have those as building blocks and create different identities.
Hence why I'm not as concerned about the future, as long as Kerns isn't lured away.
