Right. It was more of a just sayin post since we appear to be recruiting “true point guards”. I can’t think of any on the current roster. Kerns might want a true PG to run his offense, although he didn’t have one to run the offense this year, maybe not. You might have more insight into his plans and preferred style of play than I do.Stonewall wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2020 2:31 pmThat doesn't change our strategy .

Re: Hints at Next Season
Finch kid has several highlight videos on YouTube. He looks pretty good. Really fast with the ball, likes to push tempo. Seems to be at his best when he can drive and get to the rim.
His jumper is where he could use some work. Touch is good, but his release is low. Will need space to get it off.
He'd have two years of eligibility

Re: Hints at Next Season
I wish him every success at his new collegiate home. His only view of the court as a Mountaineer was going to be from the bench. Just too thin to take the punishment. Kerns now has three slots open.

Best of luck to him.
Kerns probably should go after two PG's with his 3 remaining spots. One of the JuCo guys and a high schooler he likes and can develop.

Re: Hints at Next Season
I agree. Sign the best JuCo PG he can find to run his system immediately. Sign the best prep PG available to be developed into a dazzler and ready to run the show in '22-'23.
We appsolutely need to sign another big to finish out the class. Been hoping that our last and maybe best signee would be 6-9 W/SF/PF De'Andre Pinckney from Broward College in Ft. Lauderdale. He was a top 15 JuCo player and as near a pure shooter as I've seen in this JuCo class. Unfortunately, he's listing St. John's (NYC), USF and ECU as his current top three (in that order).

Re: Hints at Next Season
We just offered 6’10” Simeon Kirkland out of Florida Southwestern (the same juco as Finch). Also of note, 6’8” 260 BJ Mack is transferring out of USF. We recruited him last year and he’s from Charlotte. Of course, there might be zero interest from either party.asu66 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 12:21 pmI agree. I realize the need to rely on Jucos when you need an immediate fix but I hope we don't become overly reliant on that source, it smacks of desperation.

Re: Hints at Next Season
I'm not a fan of over reliance on Jucos or transfers but they do serve a purpose at times like this. It not only adds a more seasoned player for immediate (hopefully) impact but they spread out the graduations so that we don't have future years when too many key players graduate at once. I completely agree that I wouldn't want to see App building a program that consistently relies on transfers (like ETSU as done) but I trust Kerns to use the options he has available.

Re: Hints at Next Season
I remember Coach Fox saying that he couldn’t rely much on jucos, I think because of the academic expectations at App Of incoming athletes. So, I don’t see us becoming a program that relies heavily on them like much of the sun belt. After glancing at rosters, App and Ga State are the only teams that don’t have several jucos. Most Sun belt rosters have half or majority juco players on their rosters. I believe O’showen was our only juco in recent memory and he turned out to be a high character guy, and vital to our success this year. Kerns might utilize a couple of jucos for immediate needs, but I’d be surprised to see us with a juco heavy roster. I don’t ever remember App having more than one or two of them on the team in the 25 years that I’ve followed the program.

Re: Hints at Next Season
I mean, I don’t want a roster full of jucos, but we’re at the other extreme now. We just had our first decent team in a decade, but still were nowhere close to winning the league. Maybe a little desperation would be appropriate?
How many teams like Little Rock have managed one or two amazing years while we’ve spent a decade “building for the long term”?

Re: Hints at Next Season
Three Jucos the next couple of years would be welcomed.
I remember Marshall Phillips and Cedric Holmes working out pretty well.
Signing 3-4 Jucos a year is desperation, signing one a year is far from it.

Re: Hints at Next Season
Huge get right there at PG. Reminds me of a longer and more physically imposing Ja Morant. Same type of bounce, shooting stroke, and tempo. Also looks like he will be a terror on the defensive end with that wingspan.
Still surprised to only see offers from App and UC Davis. In all honesty, the complete shutdown due to covid-19 may be playing to our advantage right now. This kid could have blown up on the AAU spring circuit. He plays for the 5th best prep school in the nation, so is probably flying under the radar kind of like Shabazz did at Huntington behind Miles Bridges and Thomas Bryant.

Nice. I don’t ever remember us having a player from Cali
Edit: just remembered Jamaal Trice under Capel was from LA

Re: Hints at Next Season
I didn't say that we shouldn't sign a Juco. I simply said I would hate to see us resort to going that route too frequently like many of our SBC brothers. The kid that committed today looks like a real steal. We still have at least 2 spots still available this late in the game. If Kerns and company can pull a couple more rabbits out of the hat like that, then kudos to them.

I posted there too, but I figured with this thread being mainly a discussion of what next year's rotation might look like / we need more PG depth, then the post fit here as well.

Re: Hints at Next Season
Sheldon High has 7 seniors on their team. Marcus Bagley (Marvin Bagley's brother) is the headliner. Top 40 nationally, etc. I filtered ESPN's rankings for state of CA and they have Xavion as the 22nd best player in the state for what it's worth. 2nd highest ranking on his team.appfan22 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 1:34 pmHuge get right there at PG. Excited to see him in Boone.
