Well, we couldn't reasonably expect that our athletics would be immune to the same things plaguing many others.

My sons team was just cut and we are furious. Maybe if the shitheads running our AD would open our eyes they would realize that this school did not need to spend money on that damn end zone expansion. This is Boone, NC sunbelt sports not P5. Awful money management, someone is to blame for this when there are schools in our conference that are going to be able to survive this without cutting sports

Re: App cutting multiple sports
We knew it would have to happen and I feel for all those student-athletes...truly sorry for their programs. That having been said, as an alum and a fan, I especially hate it for Men's Soccer. Being a slightly-more-than-casual fan of the sport, I tried to attend at least a few games per season and viewed the program as being on the upswing. The program had a great legacy - admittedly, that was many years ago - but I was optimistic that in the long run the program could have sustained success. Also, soccer is still growing, especially in the Carolinas, and the arrival of Charlotte MLS will only spur further interest in younger ages, which will eventually trickle up. I know IT&F has a great history also, it's simply not as much as a "spectator sport"...at least for me. I do look forward to hearing further information from DG & Co. in regard to $$$ savings by making these moves, motivation for the choices, etc. I'm sure Doug took it upon himself to do all he could to not make these decisions if at all possible and who knows, he might have even "saved" a couple of additional sports from the chopping block. I'm glad he is still the man in charge in Boone and I trust he had our best long-term interest at heart throughout this fast-moving process.

I'm sure it's Title IX reasoning, but I feel like we are cutting the wrong soccer...

As far as the sport itself is concerned, I'd agree with you. But soccer was in a makeshift conference that didn't even make much sense. Baseball had a great conference with one of (recently) the most beautiful stadiums in the country. I'd venture that many more people knew about App's baseball program compared to the soccer program.BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 2:51 pmI know i'm in the minority but i'd rather cut baseball than men's soccer.

I too think that the shaky conference deal really had to hurt the chances of Men's Soccer...MountaineerMafia wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 3:00 pmAs far as the sport itself is concerned, I'd agree with you. Re: App cutting multiple sports
Universities have forgotten the purpose of college athletics. Today less students have an opportunity to turn their athletic abilities into an education.
The rising costs of education shares part of the blame as well. The Yosef Club donations have grown well over the rate of inflation for the past 15 years, unfortunately not near as fast as the cost of tuition.

This sucks, no way around it.
Before we jump on the end zone facility as the culprit, one of the main reasons we are building that facility is to generate even more income. That income will trickle down to other sports. This stupid “pandemic” (justified or not) is wreaking havoc across the board, unfortunate we weren’t immune to it.

It hasnt been a week, it seems, that several tennis signings were announced. I would guess some folks are now thrust into finding a place to land. Having had two kids play soccer in college, I can only imagine how I would react if this happened to them.

As a parent myself, I'm sure appparent7 was speaking out of emotions. We always want the best for our kids. I wish no parent from any university (Yes, even Southern) has to experience this, but unfortunately thousands will have to suffer.appstate24 wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 3:47 pmThis sucks, no way around it.

Re: App cutting multiple sports
I feel for your student-athlete...I'd be devastated! That having been said, unfortunately, the sports that were cut do not make money and the endzone facility will, or should, especially over the long-run. I'd like to think that, were we not already in the final stages of construction of the NEZ facility, and were we back at the beginning of the process when this whole COVID mess began, the planning would still be moving forward...because facilities enhancements are a long-range driver of profit and potential. Ultimately, as much as it hurts, programs that are not as absolutely close to self-sustaining as possible will never be equal when things like today have to happen. Hopefully, a day like today doesn't have to happen again on the mtn. for a long, long, time. Best wishes to your student-athlete moving forward and thank them for their service to our alma mater.appparent7 wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 3:22 pmas a parent of a student who's team was just cut this hurts. wish they didn't expand the end zone and saved some money.

Re: App cutting multiple sports
To everybody: while this is disappointing news you who are not a Yosef Club member can help! Join Yosef! Even if it’s $20, $50, $100... join. If a lump payment is difficult you can do a monthly draft like I do. Every dollar helps!!!
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.
