We need to think bigger than handing jobs to former QBs either with no track record, or a non-descript one just because they played here.
Give me a proven innovator and talent developer. We have too much talent here to risk it on a Prodigal Son.

Not disagreeing with you, but it’s going to be hard to find a proven innovator and talent developer for what we were paying Petersen at $200,000. I would prefer an up and coming position coach ready to move into the position versus a resurrection project that may jump ship at the next P5 offer (ie Roof, Petersen).appgrad wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 11:30 pmNo.Appstate88 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 11:23 pmTime to bring Trey back. https://nguathletics.com/sports/footbal ... y-elder/61.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
I would love for these guys to do enough to warrant bringing them home, enough that I looked up Elder’s resume last year when Clark was building his staff... but there’s just not enough there. Hasn’t even really distinguished himself at whatever level he’s at now. Maybe one day.appgrad wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 11:30 pmNo.Appstate88 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 11:23 pmTime to bring Trey back. https://nguathletics.com/sports/footbal ... y-elder/61.

Lamb is just too green. Or at least I would think so.

I don’t fall into either of the polarized camps with Petersen, but I have to say it’s a little odd that you keep dunking on people like this move somehow proves he did an amazing job this year. He hasn’t done anything at Illinois yet, and the coach who hired him has a lot to prove himself considering he was an unmitigated disaster as soon as he left Barry Alvarez’s shadow.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
If we look to the FCS level, you have to wonder about the timing of a hire and their availability to our team with most of that division scheduled to play this spring. I’m not a fan of the idea of Clark taking on OC since our staff is already thin. Even if we hire a QB and/or special teams coach instead, I’m still not sure I would be a fan of the idea. A lot is at stake with however they decide to go.

Sounds like Peterson got a promotion. Going to a P-5.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
TP inherited the same exact guys Eli had... Some had injuries, sure. The different is when Eli's guys had injuries, the play calling changed. When TP's guys had injuries, nothing changed. When teams stacked the box, nothing changed. Calling the same kind of offense is one thing. Calling the right plays with your personnel in the offense is a completely different thing.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 11:15 pmRegardless of who the replacement will be, we are going to see the same offense next year, which is the same offense we saw under Eli. The only difference is that whoever it is, is going to inherent the same group of skill guys that Eli essentially had. TP did not. Some due to opt out and some to injury. But please, by all means, hang this year all on Tony.
I went back and looked. We were in 3rd and long (5 or more yards) 5 times as much as previous year. That is 100% on the OC not being able to adjust to his players. Now, is that 100% on TP? Maybe not considering Clark wanted to run our offense and TP had limited face to face time to learn/implement it.
I will say, I know with 100% certainty, our returning offensive players (especially Oline) are ECSTATIC TP is gone. That says something.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
It will be interesting to see who our OC is in 21. How will that person use all the talent at the skill positions next year? Will there be any roster fallout from this move (TP was the primary recruiter for Tabscott)? Lots of questions with know way to predict the answer right now.
I am neither over the moon or upset that TP has moved on. I personally was begging for something the change this off season with the offense; though I didn't necessarily mean staff turnover. Part of me was wanting continuity on the staff going into this next season. That said at least this time we are breaking in a new QB with a new OC instead of asking our 3 year starter to learn a third system, voice, play caller for the third time.

Would BG leave Ga State OC position and return to App for a similar role/pay?

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
It doesn't matter to me if we bring someone with App ties. I just want someone qualified and that runs more of a spread type, explosive offense.
My biggest concern is bringing someone in and not allowing them full control of the offense. Turn them loose and don't make them run the same offense we've had the past 2 years. Allow that person to come in and be themself. Give them the framework you want, but allow them to do their job.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
Fair point. Coaching is a tight fraternity and they talk. They also view the game dynamics at a level that fans don’t see. I don’t think Clark called BB and asked him to take TP off his hands because the fan base didn’t like him.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 1:12 amI don’t fall into either of the polarized camps with Petersen, but I have to say it’s a little odd that you keep dunking on people like this move somehow proves he did an amazing job this year. Re: Peterson to Illinois?
IMOP, with all the young QB talent coming in, it’s imperative that we hire a QB/OC type. We need to develop this young talent.
I believe Taylor Lamb is still too green, but who knows. Coaching is in his blood.
That being said, what about a call to Bobby Lamb? Former star QB with TONS of coaching experience and success. Last I heard he was on Napier’s staff at ULL. Might be worth at least a phone call.
I thought Levi Lewis (QB at ULL) was one of the most improved players in the SunBelt this year. If Bobby had anything to do with that, then it’s definitely worth a call.
GO APPS!!

End this thread.
Bobby Lamb? The guy that called a two point conversion with 7 seconds left. Position coach, fine, calling plays, not a chance.

Yeah, because I'm sure he hasn't learned anything from that and in all his years of coaching since then. I would rather have someone else too, but not for that reason.

Re: Peterson to Illinois?
LOL.
I was just spitballing names in my head this morning while working out. Of course “Go For 2” was beyond awful. Just thinking about people we could afford and someone that can develop the QB talent coming in.
I’ll crawl back in my hole now...LOL
GO APPS!!
