After some enhanced due diligence on the lad, I am going to retract my previous statement and say that he doesn't check all the boxes. He only has a couple of years as a QB coach which I don't expect to be enough for CSC. Secondly, he runs a spread offense. We are a running team and I don't know that he would want to acquiesce his play calling strategy to our style. For the record, I wouldn't be opposed to the hire. I just don't think that he fits the criteria.
FTR, based on the small 2020 sample size, Kent St. was 3rd in rushing and ahead of App. Sounds like he’d be able maintain the run first mentality which I’m a huge proponent of while also boosting the passing game. I mean if he can make that kind of improvement at a place like Kent St., think of what he could do with App’s talent.

As much as I’d love to have a former player running the offense, IMO no one mentioned has enough experience to be the current OC at our alma mater. I was just trying to throw out a legitimate name that seems to improve his team, is a current FBS OC and someone App can actually afford.
All cogent points. Based on the criteria set forth for the hire, I don’t find that he is ideal. Not necessarily out of the realm of possibility, but his lack of QB development works against him.
Lincoln Riley was a GA for a year and a WR coach for 3 years at TT before being hired at ECU as their QB coach and OC. I’m not saying this guy is Lincoln Riley, but I’m saying you miss out on quality hires with the kind of thinking.

I also wouldn’t say he lacks QB development, he gets to claim Dustin Crum and that’s a pretty nice skin to have on the wall.
I understand your point. And I agree with you that you can’t overlook someone because they don’t adequately check all of the boxes. As I stated, I wouldn’t personally be opposed to the hire. But the boxes that need to be checked aren’t my boxes. Just sayin’.

Must've missed this post or I would've piggy backed instead of trying to steal your shine!

Guess I started skipping posts when I saw former players getting mentioned.

I also like the Buffalo OC you mentioned. I was unable to find his OC compensation doing a quick search. Looks like the previous OC made around $135k (see 2014 article below--Satt makes an appearance in it). Do you know Kotelnicki's current salary?

Do you think it's likely we will hire a QB coach who has doesn't have the OC experience yet? Honest question as you seem to have a good pulse of the situation.

That is a negative Ghostrider. No inside info, just common sense. Not being condescending. It’s a legit question. We don’t have anyone on our staff that has neither OC experience, nor QB development history. So the two seem to related to the hire.

Co-OG-OCs.... Moore-Gibbs. First G5 to win the Championship.
I take you slept thru military history class. Especially when they covered when Hanibal crossed the Alps and whipped the Romans at the battle of Canae. Those Romans had co-generals. And the rest is history. No Romans survived.
Romans won in the end though.
The entire Roman army that was slaughtered at Canae due to their co-generals incompetence most certainly did not win in the end.

The lesson here is that a group needs one person in charge, not two. So no co OC for us.
I agree. Jerry Moore for OC. I'll give the school 200k to make it happen for a year.

Jerry Moore turns 82 years old this year. I get nostalgic sometimes too, but LORD.

True, we need some young blood. Probably better to bring back Chris Moore instead. App Guy with a championship pedigree. Make it happen Shawn!

Yes, lack of QB coaching experience. That's probably the one flaw in his resume.

(Yes, it's a joke.)

Steve Sarkisian put on a clinic last night of play calling. Excellent demonstration of using motion at the snap and getting the ball to his playmakers in space. Used tempo to create a mismatch in the secondary. Obviously, he's top shelf. However, if we can find an OC who incorporates those type of elements.....

I thought the same thing last night ...as well for OSU for Ohio State against Clemson. I believe that Ohio State had a good game plan against Clemson in that they did not waste time at line of scrimmage to give Clemson DC time to make a change or get in correct defensive scheme based upon on OSU was going to do. This may have been less about play calling and more about keeping Clemson from making defensive adjustment. I see other teams doing this in the future. In regards to last night, Alabama's skill position players were really good. The WRs get much credit, but some of the moves and adjustments by RB 22 was impressive to get extra yards when it appeared he had nothing.

I would just like a little creativity from our offense.

Play design is a science, play calling is an art. Hope our next OC has that artistic ability that I thought we lacked in '20.

Other than App, I didn't really sit and watch a lot of football until bowl season this year. It really is mind bending to look at App's offense and then compare that to other G5 schools that played bowl games. App's play calling this year had ZERO creativity. Bama is Bama, but they ran a lot of plays out of the exact same sets that App does, but their play design is so much more complex and difficult to forecast. I know App won't get Sarkisian, but someone with some ingenuity and creativity would be great.

FWIW, the convention (like pretty much all conventions at the moment) was virtual this year. Not sure how that might affect the networking component.

One thing App did in the MB Bowl was use short huddles to avoid sign stealing. Ohio State did it against Clemson, who is known for being the best sign stealers, and they made the Clemson defense look awful.

A few times, Alabama ran a screen pass where the WR in motion was a decoy and the slot WR caught the ball instead that I thought was excellent.

However, the one problem with copying Alabama is that everyone else will, plus they have the Jimmy's and Joe's to make those plays work.

I, for one, would like to see some misdirection from the offense. There were many times where it was telegraphed where the run was going and you have the RB going up against 8-9 defenders in a small area just trying to get positive yards.
