Snow Friday in Boone
may even see some tonight. Feel free to post any pics or videos. Love seeing the campus cloaked in white.
What was the most you got while you were there? I remember going out to walk around in a good one, and we ended up near the duck pond (iirc). I was walking down a hill towards the street when suddenly I was in snow past my knees. The wind had blown the snow from the street up against a stone wall and it looked like it leveled off down to the street. Nope, took one step and down to the ground below the snow. It was pretty funny.
I remember sledding down the steep hill behind Doughton Hall (lived there my senior year). It was a short ride by holy moly was it a fast one through the trees. Lucky we didn't get killed. (cafeteria trays)

I was a freshman during the Storm of the Century. Fortunately, we were on spring break.

Re: Snow Friday in Boone
It was either 83 or 84. It snowed about 10 inches then turned to rain. Beat the snow down to about 5 inches of slush, temp dropped and it snowed about 12 or 13 more inches. One VW bug in the Huey parking lot was completely covered. Later that week, security blocked off the parking lot and when all the cars were moved they brought in front end loaders to scrap the ice and snow up and trucked it off. There was so much ice some cars could not even spin their wheels and had to be pulled out before the loaders arrived.

Back in my day the snow walked 15 miles in rain and 90 degree mood swings, all uphill, to get to Boone.

April 3, 1987. We measured 47 inches of undrifted snow behind Gardner. All you could see were the tops of the cars parked in Stadium Lot.

Re: Snow Friday in Boone
In 08/09, my last season up there, I remember driving back on Christmas Day. It snowed/iced all the way up. From that point, we didn’t see grass until April. Almost snowed every day. I think that was the last good season we had in a while.

My wife and I too. I was in grad school. We lived near Bamboo Road at Village on the Green apartments. We had a downstairs apartment. I had to crawl out of our bedroom window to shovel snow from the front door as it was 3/4 high up the door. Fun memories...

Re: Snow Friday in Boone
Thanksgiving Storm of 1974: Over 40 inches standing snow, over 6 ft in drifts. This was the first time App was closed for weather. I was one of a handful who made it back. Thankfully they let me back in to my room at Justice.

The winter of '76/77.The water lines in Blowing Rock all froze.Residence & business went to the water filtration plant with 55 gal. drums. The streets were all dirt roads in the spring with all the water line replacements. One morning in Jan. the air temp. was -14,wind speed was around 40 mph.Wind chill we calculated at WASU was -82.WE STILL WENT TO CLASS!We did building hoping, going from one building to the next, warming up until we got to the building with our class.White out conditions! We were young and foolish.

Re: Snow Friday in Boone
I was a Senior and we were in Boone for Spring Break. Best memories ever. Going out in the Blizzard practically snow blind to pick up bread, eggs and milk. Listening to the local radio and all of the stories happening in Watauga County. 3.5 feet of snow, sledding off our 2nd Story Roof into 8 foot high snow drifts, 6 pm Curfew with the National Guard Patrolling, some students nearby built an actual full size igloo out of snow blocks, etc.

This was from Dec. 2018. I knew we were in for it, when I went to the Christmas parade downtown and saw Jim Cantore posted up. Measured 23.5” at the casa that weekend.

Re: Snow Friday in Boone
Gotta believe everyone that spent at least 4 years at APP should have at least one story like these. If they don’t I feel sorry for them for not getting the full experience.
