2021 FBS Conference Talk
The tweet says it all. The Atlantic Sun and the WAC are forming football conferences with intentions to go FBS.
Which means we may be 3-5 years away from the “G7”, sharing a league with the likes of Stetson, Central Arkansas, Kennesaw State and Abilene Christian.
That sounds like a lot more hands in the FBS money pie and even more like FCS 2.0.
What does this mean for the future of the current G5? The Sun Belt? And most importantly, App State?

Re: 2021 FBS Conference Talk
This would be a legit FBS conference. It would compete easily with the G5 conferences. I would love to see NC A&T make FBS. They would get good fast. If they were the only Historically black FBS team. NC A&T is one I like to pull for.

Saying this would be a legit FBS Conference makes me laugh and gag. There is at best 2 teams in their that could ever compete, let alone be legit in an FBS Conference.
That is horrible. That really isn't even a top end FCS conference...and you said a legit FBS Conference? Horrible. Sad. Horrible. No.

Re: 2021 FBS Conference Talk
I can't say I'm thrilled with the prospect of two more FBS conferences filled with nothing but move ups. This feels like a major step toward the split everyone has been talking about. I haven't been one who thought that split was inevitable, largely because I think the G5 serves a purpose in the current structure and most P5 programs know there is a benefit. If the product gets overly watered down, that value is diminished. I hate to pull against these programs, but I hope it doesn't happen.

JMU, central Arkansas and Kennesaw State and that’s it. Like another poster said, this wouldn’t even be the best FCS conference let alone a good FBS one. Not one team in the north division has been any good in forever and A&T has a looooong way to go to be a competitive FBS school. This is a weird and random mix of teams and truthfully I cannot see where the revenue comes from. JMU would have to do some heavy lifting to pull most of those schools along. I’m not seeing Stony Brook and the other northern schools putting 30k in a stadium. They don’t care about football up there. This conference looks terrible in my opinion. We’ve all been clamoring for the ESPN Thursday night Eastern Kentucky vs Stony Brook matchup. I’d rather see the so con collectively move up.

JMU was too good for the SBC that fanbase believes they can jump straight to the AAC...

Strictly enforce the 15,000 minimum attendance number. That will take care of much of this meshugas.

Re: 2021 FBS Conference Talk
I don't have a problem with FBS having some minimum standards on average attendance but if a school can meet that then let them in. I do think at some point with 140 teams it would make sense for some sort of relegation based on performance and/or attendance and enforce it by counting butts in seats.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 1:03 am

Re: 2021 FBS Conference Talk
I think the P5 would love to oversaturate the G5, so I can absolutely see this occurring.
If the CFB payout is currently say, $50m, so each G5 gets $10m to allocate among its teams. I doubt the CFB increases the total payout, we all just get less. So it’s not a negative for the P5.
Where it does benefit the P5 is payout games. If there’s only 50 great G5 programs, we all have more leverage in what we can charge Wisconsin when we go play them in Madison.
If there’s 100 G5/G7 teams, why pay App State $1m to come to Madison when they can get an FBS game in against North Alabama, pay them $700k and beat them by 50?

Re: 2021 FBS Conference Talk
Nope. In 2013 we had 3 national titles, 18 conference titles and 10 double digit win seasons under our belt. Satterfield redshirt tons of players in 2013 to prepare for the scholarship upgrade we would have as we were transitioning to FBS. App State was light years different than NC AT is today.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 1:39 pmhttps://www.espn.com/college-football/g ... =332502026Tatedc wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 7:42 amspacemonkey wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 3:04 amThis would be a legit FBS conference. Re: 2021 FBS Conference Talk
The ASUN and WAC could absolutely jump to FBS as a league. I heard that the ASUN is looking to form an FBS football league around Liberty.
FCS teams with means are figuring out that subdivision isn't worth it. However, too many FBS teams at once would be a negative. Going from 130 FBS teams to 145-150 is a big jump.
I don't think the tectonic plates under the FCS leagues are done rumbling.
Strangely enough, I think the G5 going to a G7 could be the impetus to expand the playoff as it might trigger a contract re-negotiation.

Re: 2021 FBS Conference Talk
Yes I agree with you. I'm in the minority amongst app fans in that I dont think we are better than we were our last 7-8 years in FCS. I think FBS is just not as good as we and other thought and the top of FCS is better than people know. You give teams like App, Montana and Georgia Southern full rosters they can immediately compete in FBS.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 3:42 pmTotally agree with what you are saying about 2013 and App being ahead of them. That being said...I dont think A&T is in the small list of remaining FCSers who would thrive...but I get the argument. JMU, NDSU, Jacksonville State and Montana are the only teams with the fan bases, facilities and history to deserve it...but you're right, half of FCS is ready to come and compete with the Rice and ULMS of the world.
