Twitter is all a-twitter with the video of a small groups of our students cursing, flipping off, throwing stuff, and spitting on the Marshall players after the game.
No such video exists that I’ve seen and I’ve regrettably been super plugged into this issue all day today.

There’s a video of a Marshall player spitting on our students. There’s a video of fans jeering Marshall players where you can make out one F bomb. There’s an unsupported accusation from a Marshall fan about cursing and flipping off. Not even Karen van Karen accused our students of spitting.

Can we combine threads? When you log in to YC late in the day after a game and something really famous has happened you might want to check a thread or two to see if the topic has already been posted.
Very unfortunately it’s true. I saw the vid flipping off and f- you to the Marshall players and other stuff being yelled at them. A couple of their players were pulled away by a team mate. And I do not blame them for being mad.
I wondered how it would be for a “rival” team coming through there.

Gonzo, I should have replied earlier. It's all over twitter.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

These students need to act better, and they should be embarrassed, but if it was no more than words, fix it and move on.
Here here. Outside of this message board, it’s already forgotten about. Stick an officer there or put a roof on it and we are all set.

I’m sure some other fanbase will do something dumb tomorrow. There’s a full slate of games.
Upon looking at my thread title I now see that it should have been "Fans acting the fool." I sincerely have no idea that it was all students. Also apparently a journalist associated with the Herd was also somehow involved. I shouldn't have convicted students, but I still stand by my opinion that this behavior is unacceptable and those spitting, throwing things should be dealt with.
I don’t condone the behavior. And I’m probably being a little harsh on you, apologies. But I’m also not interested in perma-banning students for swearing. I’ve seen people go as far as to say they should be expelled. I think that’s nuts.

Those yahoos probably woke up this morning and nearly shit a brick when they saw they were all over the internet. a panic filled day for them I’m sure.

Now if anyone spit, they should be arrested because it’s assault, and gross.

The problem was letting students be over there unattended in the first place. I’m sure we will see some quick changes and all will be well in Mountaineer land.

One thing that doesn't seem to be pointed out enough is the spitting incident by the Marshall player seems to happen BEFORE this video. Does that make it right? No. But it also doesn't show the whole story.

The player that spit did it in the lower side of the ramp closest to the field. The guys giving hell were further up the ramp in reaction to the spitting.

Yeah… I’m on Twitter. I’ve seen the viral video a dozen times at this point and it doesn’t contain what was alleged in the text of the same tweet. That doesn’t mean it didn’t necessarily happen, but there are many reasons to doubt the veracity of her claim (see my post in the postgame MMB thread for those reasons). To date I haven’t seen an App fan or Marshall fan or anyone else corroborate what she claimed.

Here’s the footage of the spitting:

To me it seems like a colossally backwards “scandal.” Poor player conduct is WAY worse than poor student fan conduct. Spitting (amid a pandemic) is WAY worse than saying mean things, and merely claiming certain things were said alongside a video that shows NONE of those things happening carries far less weight than an actual video of bad conduct.

Honestly, I don’t even care about the Marshall player spitting. Everyone coming out of the woodwork wagging their finger at our fan base is either a CFB fan who hates Appalachian or an App fan who relishes the chance for a soap box “back in my day” rant. This is a classic “we lost but at least we have class” diversion. This lady (who was a Marshall fan yesterday not a Journalist) transferring her angst into a moral high ground. If you’re clutching pearls over this you either have an agenda or you’re bitch-made.

I didn’t see anyone throw or spit but if all they did was curse and talk trash to them then this is a huge overreaction. If they did spit and throw things then that’s embarrassing. But for Marshall fans to act like they’re the St Louis Cardinals fans of college football is pretty hilarious and rich though.

Where do y'all get that she's a marshal fan? Looks like she's a Cali girl. Not real sure why a random freelance journalist that writes for the esteemed sideline sass who's motto is "athletics with attitude" was given a press pass to begin with. She doesn't appear to have any connection with either team or their TV markets. All I can find is that she had a Marshall Lineman on podcast one time.

She lists her Instagram and linkden I guess as her form of communication but im still not seeing a real connection.

All that needs to be done is an official apology from the school to Marshall and pay the hell attention to what we said would happen with players coming out ne to to our student section. Put some sec urity over there and prevent it

I think you are right, but I hope Apps administration remembers it. This risk should have been identified early and proper security should have been in place while opposing team enters and leaves the field....I expect there will be going forward.

I seem to recall that we predicted this when it was noted the locker rooms would be changed. There would be issues with the visitors entering from the West side in a huge bottleneck and through our fans

I was one of those. Logistically this was a mistake. Now fix it by making the wall higher.

Unfortunately we can’t stop drunk students from being aholes, but we can make it more difficult to impact players.

They’re yelling at players… if our stadium had 60k then nobody would bat an eye like hundreds of stadiums across the country, but because there were only a handful right there, it looks much worse than it actually is. They’re talking shit to the players. Let’s move on. This shouldn’t be a big deal.

That has that podcast site listed as her being a reporter of. She's just at Marshall doing that report. She's just some freelance woman from Cali who understands why TMZ is popular and writes by the rules of sidelines asss.com "anything for a click."

I think that would be freelance as well.

People are so soft these days. The players can talk crap to the fans on the sidelines, dance around on our field, disrespect us by spitting on our students, but if we call them a body part or a bad name then we “look trashy”. Give me a Fing break.

Showing some level of decorum and maturity is not being soft. I suppose you guys would draw the line at shooting the opposition.

Would it be acceptable to see a Marshall player walking down the street and do the same? I suppose if one were behind a 10 foot high wall, one might dare do it.

The damage is done. Hopefully, the admin will act to deter this in the future. Not sure why they didn't see what many here did.

I’m sure they thought they were having a good time and being funny. If they are students, then the administration has an opportunity to make a statement and let people know that this will not be tolerated and any further actions will have consequences.
