Southern is undoubtedly our #1 rival at the moment. Fortunately though, we're surrounded by good regional programs (CCU, Marshall, ODU, WKU) that could become solid rivals if the worst happens to GS, or we're separated by realignment.

Troy is, at the moment, our toughest rival in football. Each of our games against them have been competitive and they were arguably the best team in the conference in 2016.
Takes a long time to build a real rivalry
I agree for the most part, bcoach and I would never consider Ga State a rival (unless it is in terms of a WCU type of rival where we own the series 50 something to something in the low teens. However, I can't quite put my finger on why exactly but I have taken in great pleasure in the beatdowns of gsu thus far and will only be happier when we take down the Shawn Elliott version of the kitties. :)
I will never enjoy beating S E as he is a friend of the family but will naturally be pulling for us when we play him.

I think that Coach Elliott is a great guy and coach. I will just never pull for anyone suiting up against the black and gold. I doubt if he and Satt look forward to that game even though both are very competitive.

I have said it before, and here I go again. Ga State is on the rise, Ga Southern is in decline. If Elliot has one game on the calendar circled it's us. He may not have the talent to beat us this year, or next, but we are not going to own the Panthers like we owned the Catamounts. This is perfect gridiron rivalry in the making and we may need another rival in Georgia if the stink can't get back on track.

Before everyone writes off GS based on the 2016 season, you'd better look at the coaching changes in the off season. They hired a new OC from Georgia Tech and another offensive coach from Army. Both have worked in successful TO teams under former GS coaches. Their entire offensive staff has changed and they will be committed to the TO. In terms of talent, they had plenty this past year and going into 2017, they are a few OL away form being very competitive. They might fall flat again in 2017, but I'm not counting on it. They will likely have something to prove and could be very dangerous.

I think they do have some roster question marks heading into this year, but I think the idea that their program is going in the toilet for the long haul is overblown. If Summers doesn't turn it around in another year or two (and I'd bet on the shorter end of that term), they'll fire him and find someone who will. They are simply too committed to football to stay down too long.

And I'm also taking a show-me approach to Ga. State. Just because they have a converted baseball stadium and a new coach, that doesn't mean they're automatically on the rise. I know all us App folks have a soft spot for Elliott, but he's not exactly proven as a HC or even as a coordinator.

Those who overlook Georgia Southern do so at their own peril.

With the exception of the first post, I count maybe one post that in any way discounts or overlooks GaSo.

I think we all know that they can be dangerous and that they haven't fielded their last great squad. That's what makes the entire conceit of this thread so weird.

I will not overlook the stink or any team on our schedule, but since all I do is watch, I don't think that matters much. Here's the deal with the stink... they can't keep a coach and it's hurting them, and it's hurting them bad. If Tyson Summers can survive the flames they will lose him too. Nuff said.
