Not trying to be Confucius here but if everyone keeps looking at the past we will never move forward to the future.

I refuse to believe that the entire OL unit would have regressed the way it has if JM were still the coach. There simply is no historical evidence to point to and say it would have, he coached for over 20 years here and the wheels never fell off like this. Our issues are not the players, it's the coaching. The head coach is over his head, the defensive coach can't seem to get the kids to play well, the off-season strength and conditioning coach seems to have taken time off because the entire team seems weaker, slower and physically unprepared to play college football.
A few points:

-Our entire offense isn't back from last year. Miller is in the NFL, Jamal never recovered, and now Price is gone after already missing two games.

-The O-Line was equally as bad last year, but the guys above (especially Miller with his quickness) covered a LOT of their mistakes. JJ was also able to hit Price for a ton of deep passes to get us out of trouble.

-In 1993 Moore's team started 1-7

Having said that, there is no way to say what our record would be if JM was coaching. This is 2013, Satterfield is our coach, and we have a lot of work to do.

I know about the 93 team starting 1-7 but that team wasn't coming off of a conference title with 10 of 11 returning starters on offense. I never said the entire O returned, I said the entire starting OL returned, which it did and it has regressed. I know it was bad last year but these kids should have improved with an additional seasons worth of experience and an off season to get bigger and strong. Neither one of those has happened and I blame that on coaching. We should have a high powered offense, and even without JJ and SP we should be able to manage to move the ball and score points. We may not have the big tall deep threat with SP but we are loaded at wr with enough talent to get the job done. Our team simply isn't being coached well this year at all.

I misread the OL Starters and thought you said O Starters. Either way they guys above made them look much better than they were. Even with them we had a ton of 3 and outs, or series that ended with only 1 first down last year. We all talked about how Sam Martin was team MVP last year because he kept pinning the other team deep after the offense did nothing with the ball. Let's face it, we were lucky to win 3 or 4 of those 8 games last year.

T-Dog wrote:So after the game, DJ and Brownie took a lot of calls. There were a couple in a row that raise some eyebrows, one of them was mine. The first was about future recruiting and Brownie started talking about S&C. Then my turn came up. I asked about S&C (as I intended from the moment I called) and mentioned Kareem Young by name. Brownie made the comment about the players "not being strong enough to compete". AppFan made a comment and the Twitter firestorm started.

So what say you, the bandwagon that is left. :(

All you have to do is look at the weights these guys are lifting. Heard a comment in the spring that incoming freshmen were lifting at or above some of the juniors and seniors. Not good. Kareem had almost no S&C experience before landing as a GA with Mike Kent. Once again Cobb took the cheap option instead of the best option.

Believe we would be undefeated if Mack Brown was still our coach.
Come on, get real. Deal with what we have this year. No use in using the situation to
take jabs at the App State program just to give yourself some sick tingle.

Unless someone could provide us all with the numbers involved with the weight program from several years ago compared to today I'm not sure how anyone can say this current group is weaker - However, there is no question they are not being as well coached as when Elliott was here - I'm not knocking Ledford because I am sure he is a quality coach BUT Elliott was SPECIAL as is being shown for what he has done for The Ol BallCoach ---

I am no expert but don't you have to have the strength to execute your assignment even with the best coaching there is?

First, it doesn't change where we are at this point and second, we have know way of knowing what our record would be if Jerry were still the HC. Pointing fingers and taking sides with respect to our head coach isn't getting us any closer to dealing with our current situation.

Plus we have the same o-line coach we had last year, so the coaching hasn't changed there.

no argument but look at our guys and they aren't 95 pound weaklings - the most important parts of playing the OL are communication, technique and leverage ---

Not necessarily. As a coach, I know technique and footwork will beat out strength any day of the week. That's not to say strength isn't needed but it is not everything.

You know folks, it's time this fanbase start pulling for APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY and quit this total nonsense about "Jerry this" and "if Scott that" . Time to quit pouting and quit taking sides. We are ALL on ONE SIDE---Appalachian State--- We are all guilty of acting like babies to some extent since coaching change. How about this.... Let's move on and give OUR SCHOOL some support. If our football administration needs to clean house with dicipline-problem players then so be that too.

Went back to re-hear Brownie's comments regarding S&C and got these. Not 100% word-for-word but 95%, which according to every school I ever went to was an A. :D
"From what I've seen is a little bit of softness, a lot of finesse-type football, and on both sides of the ball, we're getting pushed around, and we're not getting pushed around by big playoff teams that have beaten us in the past....we're getting pushed around by Charleston Southern, by A&T (and) a good Samford team......"

"From what I've seen this year, we've got to make some changes and take some hard looks at what we're doing conditioning wise to get our kids bigger (and) stronger."

Steve is close enough to the program to know what is going on. He just doesn't show up on Saturday to call the games. Pay close attention to what he is saying.

I want to know who's going to clean house in the athletics department?

Nobody any time soon is my guess. I don't believe we have the money, or the desire, to make the changes that need to be made in the short term. I also believe SS deserves some more time if he gets the assistants that we need and not just old playing buddies.
