You're joking right? Last time I checked, the "violent" portion of football was 60 minutes on Saturdays in the fall. No women are on the field and punches can't be thrown. Go back to the drawing board and try again. Maybe it's video games?

Oh, I know, maybe this guy just needs someone to kick his butt into line because someone obviously missed it growing up.

There is usually a cooling off period for domestic violence but not assault. The logic behind the difference is that in a domestic violence case they usually return to the same domicile where they cohabitate, where even if things have calmed down they heat up again. That's can be the case in normal assault but doesn't have to be.

In your 24 years of what? Practicing law or being alive? If it's being alive, do you practice law somehow like the legal Doogie Howser? Again, if it is 24 years of age, how do you have any familiarity with the legal process here?

I can't remember exactly what AppState89 does these days, but he's been in law enforcement for 24 years.

No national attention for this. We are still a Bastard Child of the college football world. Now if this guy only played for one of the big 5 BCS conferences, you have a media story.

How would you spot this type inclination while recruiting? The prep coaches would have to inform the recruiter of the players' propensities and that is unlikely even if the high school coaches even know.
High school coaches know a lot more than you seem to think. When you have a tight relationship with them you can get tipoffs. You can look at social media and get tips and you can spot things in an interview. Talk to people. You will also notice that I said many times you can't. If you will notice over the years the percentage of bad apples we have had is very low. I am sure all coaches want it to be even lower.

If we were BCS he might not have been arrested. And rape isn't a class 1A misdemeanor.

(I'm not saying Wilson did it or not but the investigation did take place before the arrested. That may be the way it should happens but very seldom does.)

Honestly surprised that this is even up for debate. I thought it would be hard for anyone to miss the frequent news stories about football's culture of violence. Just Google Richie Incognito, Steubenville, or just "football culture violence." Or heck, for that matter, OJ Simpson.

Again, I am not saying Alex Gray punched his girlfriend because he plays football. I don't know anything about him or his personal background. Sorry to derail the thread. (Or, I guess I should say, further derail it.)

Didn't know if the "89" in his name was graduation year, or birth year. I was just wondering how a 24 year old could be that familiar with legal proceedings. His comment makes a lot more sense now. Thanks

I just think that a person is violent more so because of their childhood development than a sport they play. Even looking at it statistically, there's way more people involved in football who aren't violent than are. I just (only a personal opinion for a messageboard) think the "violent football culture" belief is a perpetuation by a 24 hr sports news market; the violence incidents get a lot more exposure than ever before, and are reported on round the clock. People see football playing criminals a lot more frequently, so start believing there's something to it. To step back, I still believe the root is the homes some of these people are coming from and that's a whole societal issue.

Football has nothing to do with it. George Hughley (sp?), the UVA lacrosse player that murdered his lacrosse playing girlfriend, didn't play football.

The most violent sport I am aware of is hockey. How often do you hear about a hockey player beating on a woman? I can't think of one time really. My theory on that is that for years the vast majority of players were coming off the Canadian farms and blue collar areas. If their dads ever found out they laid a hand on a woman it would be the last damn time that ever happened.
It is not the sport it is the person playing it.

Some good responses here. Ima step back now because I remembered I joined this site to read about App sports rather than get in social debates. Gotta blame myself on this one. ;)

Jadeveon Clowney speeding 110 mph recently made the media, and he fortunately did not hurt anyone as our guy did.

the reason it's not getting attention is that law enforcement and the school dealt with this right away. I don t care if he hit the girl with an open hand.....you don't hit women. For me this is at least a 1 year suspension from football anywhere and any school. I would like the NCAA to step in and help set examples with exclusions.

Hope the new staff is doing a better job of checking these kids backgrounds than in the past. Don't believe everything the coach says. Talk to their guidance counselor, teachers and pastors if they have one.
