Mellow Mushroom if I have to eat in Boone.
Use to like Frankie's but it's closed down.
Breakfast goes to Troy's Diner.
I used to be a Woodlands guy. Then I moved to another part of the State. Woodland's BBQ is decent. The sides are good. But I could name 5 other restaurants in Boone with better food.
That's why they make chocolate and vanilla.
I can't think of any in Boone that can touch it and I've been eating in Boone since the 80's. But it all depends on what you like.
If you live in Durham and eat east coast BBQ you've forgotten what good BBQ is anyway.
I do eat at Los Arcoiris from time to time. Good student prices on food and beer. Glad to see Boone has mexican food, they built the Taco Bell (I know it's not mexican) right before I left.

The founder of Peppers was an App student who dropped out to start the restaurant(s)...quite successfully at that. I say restaurant
s because he first started down around the 800 block of Blowing Rock Rd.
Is that when it was near Makoto's, I use to eat there as a student. I didn't know it was still in town.
Harris Teeter shopping center on 321 up on the hill across the road from the Post Office. Can get there from 321 or Shadowline Dr.
So it has moved again since I was there.

Back Yard Pit on 55 is the best in the State.
And the new Mexican place T-Dog mentioned is going to put Los and Dos to shame if it's half as good as it's sister restaurant in Banner Elk. My god that place is good.

Yes, except the building Makatos was in was a medium to pricy steak restaurant at the time, similar to Steak and Ale.
Peppers is now out in the strip mall close to Perkinsville.
That location hasn't been there for several years. Peppers is in the Shops at Shadowline.
Thanks to everyone I might have to check it out this year, I might have seen it but it never really comes up with my girls, so I may have forgotten about it.
I use to like Peddler's also but it was kind of high priced for a college couple (until we knew the manager and he'd give us half price off on our Ann'y and B'day's which is the only time we went).
Their steaks were good, but I loved their salad bar because you could get smoked oysters. Nothing better on a salad then a load of oysters.

Oh cool. So you've been to literally every BBQ joint in the entire state of NC and made a thoughtful determination based on your experience. Why don't you write a book?
It's not downtown but I've been to Casa Rustica (Highway 105 south) several times and I really enjoy their food.

Just to reinforce how old I am, the Gold Room was still in Plemmons Student Center and had decent steaks students could enjoy using meal tickets.

I've been to many. Virtually all the "famous" spots and every hole in the wall I can find. It's what I live for. Maybe I
should write a book.
My preference is a common one.

There's nothing like the smell of passing Woodlands on a crisp, gameday morning. I'm surprised they seem to be moving more toward a barbecue/Mexican combo- I like Mexican, but what's up with that?
As far as breakfast, I'm still mourning the loss of Knights on Main and the "old" Mountain House, but Sunrise isn't too shabby.

That's not THAT old. I used to hit up the Gold Room too. I started at App in 99. Though, I was pleased when they replaced it with McAlister's.

I always get a chuckle when folks proclaim this or that restaurant to be the best. Food and beverage is about taste...and there is no accounting for it.

I generally agree, but BBQ is different.

Have to agree about Sunrise beating out any breakfast spot in Boone, especially for the price.

Same here you could hear the piano music playing down the hall. Only could afford to eat there one time since I lived off campus the only meal ticket I had was the US Army and work. (Just kidding of course)

Well there is only two kinds of BBQ - good and bad. If it's not lexington style BBQ (slow cooked, covered in "dip", with FF and red slaw and hot sauce) it falls into the later. (Yes Texas and KC beef falls in the last group as well, and I've had them in texas and KC. Forget Memphis thick sauce as well...last group)
If you're down east Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q is pretty good and fair priced as well. Also the Lexington style at BBQ House on Oak Island isn't bad either.

IMHO

Knights on Main was a good spot that we would hit up a couple times a year. Any word on why they shut down?
