Big Fox fan, but one ok win does not an upward "trend" make. Capel left us in shambles, but Fox has been underwhelming thus far.appvette wrote:Woot!! Coach Fox is slowly trending upward which is all we can ask for!

I thought he should have been Sun Belt Coach of the Year last year for winning 12 games with what he had to work with.

Most of our fans are at the point now where the most exciting thing about basketball is thefact that we get a new coach next season. This 4-0 thing was overplayed because of the larger run we've had in team sports this year.BUTCH1991 wrote:They're crowd is no better than ours. The reality is, we are a very poor basketball team.

We are at least eligible for post season play. That's at least a step in the right direction, trending upward is sort of right!!

Didnt expect big win totals, did however expect us to be competitive. Which for the most part we havent been. Actually gotten worse this year. Happy about the win but still unsure we are headed in the right direction. This is a hire I was ecstatic about. He says all the right things and coaches his butt off on the sidelines but the results for the most part are getting worse.AppinVA wrote:Really? What did you expect him to do? Starting to turn the corner. It's going to be a long and painful process, as we knew. I wouldn't have thought it possible for a 12-17 season to create artificially high expectations, but I think that's what happened to us.

Notice I said SLOWLY trending upward. How can a coach be underwhelming when he was left with shambles? And why would you be a Fox fan if you think he's been underwhelming?ASUPATCH wrote:Big Fox fan, but one ok win does not an upward "trend" make. Have you watched / listened to the games or just scoreboard watched? I may be wrong, but I would suspect just scoreboard watched. If so I can see where you would think there has been no improvement. I have however listened to most games and watched when the games have been available. What I have seen is some improvement - especially on the defensive end. What I see most is inconsistency resulting from youth which is correctable and coachable. I also see the team not giving up (competing in the hustle stats) and working hard to get over the hump.ASUPATCH wrote:Didnt expect big win totals, did however expect us to be competitive. Let's level set and also compare last year to this year:
On this date last year we were 4-10 with just 1 conference W and rallied for a 12-17 finish - that would have qualified for the conference tourney if we were eligible. This year we are 4-13 with 2 conference W's and just 5 home games to date.
Another point comparing last year to this year, albeit with capel recruits, we played with a fairly older team (JRs and SRs) in '14-'15. This year we are playing with true freshman getting significant minutes. We are not Duke or Kentucky getting McDonald's All-Americans. Our Freshman have to learn under fire and will be prone to mistakes. There will be frustratingly low lows, but the more this team plays Together I suspect we will see more improvement.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this team close like we did last year.

We are .500 over our last 4 games and if we hadn't faded down the stretch against UTA, we'd be 3-1 over that span. The team showed some resilence last night by coming out ready to play after gettingvwhipped pretty badly at Little Rock.
I saw the team against Furman and was extremely disappointed in their performance. Returned to Boone last Saturday and was impressed with their grit in the win over Texas State. The team is improving but will likely have a game or two like the UALR game. For me the key is an improving defense and commitment to rebounding. For the most part I saw that last night. Looking forward to next Saturday.

We also have a lot of new faces playing major minutes this year, and its a known fact that his system isn't the easiest to run. We've won 2 of 3 and almost 3 of 4 in a stretch featuring the 3 best teams in the conference. Stay patient with the boys.ASUPATCH wrote:Didnt expect big win totals, did however expect us to be competitive. Which for the most part we havent been. Actually gotten worse this year. There will be more ups and downs this year. That's what happens when 3 freshmen get significant playing time. The program was a rancid, steaming pile when Fox got here. He needs a couple more recruiting classes to undo the damage.

I think I was most impressed by the sheer hustle I saw on the court. Diving for loose balls, rebounding. They looked very determined.

ASUPatch, have you coached before? He had a good year last year because he had a few players to work with. This year is the rebuilding year. Give coach Fox a break. Now is the time to play have patience . You will see early next year growth in this team until then I am keeping my expectations low and Support High. Chapel screwed ASU because we wouldn't cheat like unc-CH.

He has basically the same team minus Tommy but he is playing the newcomers including the JUCO O'Boyle. Hopefully, short term pain long term gain. So far, I'm impressed with the two 2016 guys he's recruited.

That plan seems to have worked for Satterfield. I like it. Its planning for the long haul and not instant gratification.hapapp wrote:He has basically the same team minus Tommy but he is playing the newcomers including the JUCO O'Boyle.
