For all the UNC fans turning their noses up on the App State Football program, they sure seem to like App State on their staffs:

Per Ethan Joyce's article in the Winston-Salem Journal:

"There are more than a few App State connections on the UNC sideline: Lonnie Galloway, UNC’s receivers coach, was an assistant at App State during the I-AA national championship years from 2005 to 2007; O-line coach Stacy Searels coached at App State from 1994 to 2000; Sparky Woods, the man who replaced Brown as App State’s head coach in 1984, is a senior adviser to the head coach; Mario Acitelli, a special teams analyst, played offensive line at App State; defensive analyst Preston Mason was a student assistant at App State; and John Mark Hamilton, UNC’s director of player personnel, spent 12 years at App State before joining the Tar Heels program."

I want the win for 2 reasons. Not necessarily because its UNC. We need to be undefeated by Mid-October to have a realistic shot at the Top 25 and other Sun Belt teams in the last 2 years have been beating P5s who are/were about equal to where UNC is in terms of football.

I don't mind many of the UNC football fans saying this is App States "Superbowl" at all. They talk about us having a football culture like it's a cute little fuzzy pup. They fail to realize the simple truth that in a real football culture, every darned game is the Superbowl!

Go App!

UNC also thinks they are ECU's superbowl, look at how that's turned out for them lately. Hoping for similar results.

Implying we don't have to hear about them all the time...

I heard them say, “we have nothing to gain from this if we win” and “this is Apps Superbowl”. Honestly, I’m on the opposite end of both. I think App will not gain much from a win, outside of some better awareness on the recruiting trail and local media markets, but I think most will say “yes, App should’ve won”. I think the UNC players and coaches are circling this one to say that they have to win it to show they are moving in the right direction. For me, I know we are a better program and team. Problem is, I don’t know if our defense is ready.
Do you realize the type of legitimacy that ECU gained, in the State, and in the National Media, when Holtz finally got them over the hump in 2008? Beating WVU with Pat White in Greenville 24-8 and then beating Virginia Tech 27-22 in Charlotte (same day as the App - LSU game which I stayed home to watch rather than going to Charlotte thanks to the hurricane changing game time) got ECU up to 14th in the polls. While the season fizzled out, it presented ECU with the legitimacy it had missed since the 90's and ultimately led ECU to getting Ruffin McNeil and Lincoln Riley from Texas Tech after the Mike Leach fallout.

It helped ECU to expand their facilities, increase funding for their athletics, and resulted in consecutive wins against Virginia Tech, NC State (winning 42-7 at one point, beating Russel Wilson in OT in Greenville, beating UNC 70-42, Zay Jones, Justin Hardy, etc. etc. etc.).

Don't underestimate what a win here could do. Many, many people in the state still think of App as Division 2 in football despite being FBS and playing at a high level. Beating Penn State does a lot for the perception inside and outside the state but beating UNC would do more in-state than most wins against a Big 10 school would provide.

Is it a Super Bowl for the team? No. But if App were to win, the trickle down effect should be swift and immediate.

Assuming App wins this game, and how they win this game, the result would likely be a Top 25 ranking in the coaches poll. App is up to 12 points in that poll now and I suspect beating UNC would provide the visibility needed to break through.

But you still have to go out and win.

I wish, but doubt it. They will probably begin to talk about how overrated UNC was instead of how good App State is and they would be half right.

Doubtful. Teams between 21 and 25 lose often, this year seems especially bad as Cal, despite barely hanging on against North Texas, got in the Top 25. If App beats UNC, they will be in via the Boise State route as I believe many voters have begun to look at App in that same light. I know Boise has done much more but App's transition, to this point in comparison to Boise's, is very similar, if not better. Thus, App is sort of piggy backing on that Boise State train, in my opinion.

An example of this is Boise getting ranked after beating Florida State despite their QB being sacked 8 times. I halfway expect them to lose tonight solely based on the fact that some team is going to wreck their game plan, shorten the game, and not allow Boise to control the clock.

I don't know if App will get into the top 25 for certain with a win on Saturday, but I did notice that ESPN flashed a graphic during the Tulane-Houston game last night with "notable G5 games" for the weekend. Included were Boise, UCF, Army (I think I remember them), and App. It's good company to be in, and important that our name is mentioned with them. With that said, keep winning is all we can do. The sooner we're ranked (if), the better chance we stand at the end.
Give 'em hell!

If we win big, we'll get a lot of coverage and more votes obviously, if we win but it's close I doubt we're in the Top 25 this week. Would need to keep winning. I recall last year an AP voter said he voted for us because we were beating everyone badly...until the meltdown game against the team whom shall not be mentioned.

Here’s the thing to me about these P5 games. G5 wins are rare, and generally come from a good G5 beating a bad P5. Should we win against Carolina, they will be 2-2 on their way to 2-3 after next week and who knows where they season goes from there. Just compete to be 1-0 each week and see what happens.

Really don't care about top 25 right now, just need to win. Can discuss rankings Sunday.

We melted down because we lost our starting quarterback.

Let's get 'em all. Darrell Moody was left off of the list... https://goheels.com/coaches.aspx?rc=3348&path=football

I don't have a need to win big against THE flagship on their chapelboro turf. I'll take a one point win on a forward deflection off of the goal post! (With a wide grin on my face!)

UNC alum here but also ASU fan, my younger sister and only sibling is an alum and i love you folks and Boone. I'm an InsideCarolina member and there are a LOT of delusional folks there in terms of their thoughts about this game and their thoughts about app st in general and our program as well. Starting this season with wins over south carolina and miami was MASSIVE for our struggling program and we're proud about that but CFB is game to game, we lost to wake and the continued chirping from our fans is embarrassing. Please don't mind those people. The vast majority of actual UNC alums and knowledgeable fans understand what kind of really good program you guys have built up there in Boone. I'm looking forward to a good game and i hope we play in KB at some point in the future, best small stadium ive ever been to - several games with my alum sister & her alum fiance. Amazing/special town and school yall have up there.

Absolutely and I feel exactly the same way...just win baby! Ranking will come when it comes!
