Throw out the winding down FCS and transition years, they are a blip on the radar. 8 wins is a poor year for APP Football for the conference we are in now along with the caliber of recruits we are signing and the number of games on the schedule and possible bowl game awarded after 6 wins.

None of this is in vacuum. Some of how well we compete is dependent on the opposition we face. Does the schedule get tougher? Do teams in the Sun Belt improve? Nothing is static. There is a fine line between winning and losing and sometimes the ball bounces the wrong way. There are very few programs that escape a dip in performance. And, its often not just one season. I'm not sure we're exempt from that possibility.

The "ball bounces the wrong or right way" thing is always interesting. I wonder how many games we have won/lost over the last 10 years in which the ball, so to speak, bounced one way or the other? I can think of three biggies, Tennessee, Wake at home and our first bowl game. One could argue that we lost the first two and won the second one on FG's. We make one at Tennessee and we might have pulled out a win, fail to get one blocked by Wake and we win, and miss the kick in the first bowl game we lose. It would be interesting to see how games have played out in which winning and losing was that close for us.

Why don’t we drop to D2 and dominate completely? Go undefeated every year and win NC every year.

The premise of the original thread is absurd. Would anyone ask tarheels fans such a stupid question?

They are thinking that way during this basketball season.
