Was it a play off game? I was at App from 80 to 84 and have gone to home games every year since. I don't remember attendance being as bad as 8k for any regular season games. I remember a few 20k plus crowds in the 80's. Maybe someone has access to average attendance numbers from back then. Just curious.
It is generally acknowledged Mark Dreibelbis inflated attendance numbers. Since ASU did not count people entering the gates tickets sold or given away was the only factual number and student attendance was a complete guess. The only accurate numbers are the NCAA controlled playoff games.

According to ASU media guides these are the "official" sub 10,000 attended games in the 1980's:

9-12-81 vs JMU - 9200, 11-7-81 vs Marshall 8200, 211-20-82 vs WCU 6150, 11-12-83 vs Marshall 8112, 10-27-84 vs Citadel 9850, 11-17-84 vs SC State 8142, 11-285 vs VMI 4600, 11-16-85 vs Marshall 8355, 10-25-86 vs Furman 9870, 11-29-86 vs Nicholls State (PO) 6250, 11-28-87 vs Richmond (PO) 4138, 12-5-87 vs GSU (PO) 9229 The Ice Bowl, 10-22-88 vs ETSU 8100.

Just for fun, in the 1990's:

10-30-93 vs UTC 9500, 10-14-85 vs GSU 8800, 11-25-95 vs JMU 9500 (PO), 12-3-95 vs SF Austin 8950 (PO), 11-23-96 vs VMI 8260, 11-22-97 vs Liberty 8700, 11-28-98 vs Tenn State 3900 (PO), 11-27-99 vs FL A&M 6800 (PO)
