Re: Comments from new SGA President
The point isn't whether hardcore students that attend lots of athletic events get their money's worth given the free attendance. The point is that the fee isn't optional even for the many students who couldn't care less about athletics. They may be hard for folks on this board to relate to, but we shouldn't assume they support Appalachian any less. Even with the ticket price increases and YC requirements this year, an alumni can make their $500 donation and buy football season tickets in a good section for less than the students pay - even the ones that don't attend a single game.

Student tickets are "general adm." anyone can sit down there and they will never turn students away b/c the hill/away side general adm./and the temp. bleachers are all general adm. The only way they will turn students away are if the fire marshal shuts the gates b/c of capacity.NewApp wrote:Mike, I think it is basically first come/first serve.scatman77 wrote:"at a reduced price." Do App students still get free admission due to the fees?TheMoody1 wrote:They get student tickets at a reduced price.

Which will probably happen for the Miami game.3rd wrote:Student tickets are "general adm." anyone can sit down there and they will never turn students away b/c the hill/away side general adm./and the temp. bleachers are all general adm. Re: Comments from new SGA President
Perhaps the new SGA "administration" and their 1400 or so supporters should propose this arrangement. Possibly the other 15,000 students might be moved to involve themselves into student government:

Clemson students have a much weaker argument than our kids. Someone on here said they have no athletic fees the petition says it is $100. Either way spread over the athletic budget and the cost of the FB tickets in no way are they paying to attend FB games as the petition says. Again the big picture here is the fans carry that program and they do not need the students financial backstop. Either the students will pony up at a discount or someone else will buy the tickets full price. Supply and demand. We on the other hand charge every student >$700 dollars ( it is reasonable to think a couple hundred at least goes to FB right?) and have an over supply.

My son is a Clemson student. One key difference there is that total student tickets are limited to about 12,000 max and distribution is made by class (grad student, seniors, juniors, etc.) Once the allotment is completely distributed, they're done. So, if Notre Dame or another premier opponent is coming to town and you're a freshman or sophomore, you may be looking a paying the going rate on Stub Hub.

They ought to raise ticket prices anyway. I'd give a discount to Yosef contributors(keep prices the same as they are now) and charge those that are not Yosef contributors more for tickets.bcoach wrote:But that cuts both ways. If it is not a big deal then why not add it to ticket prices? Better yet how about all the fans who actually go to the games contribute $15.00 a month to JosefRekdiver wrote:I wish people would quit making a mountain out of a molehill on the fee issue. Re: Comments from new SGA President
I just get tired of this coming up every few years from a small group that doesn't have interest in sports. Like others have mentioned there are fees in place to cover plenty of things that each student will never take advantage of. Plus this isn't some unique situation just at App. Other than some of the P5 schools students pay these fees at all universities, and many of them are much higher that what we have at App. There are plenty lower as well which they like to point to, but each school has a different situation. I wish we could lower the fees, but that is up to us as alumni to give back more.
I hope they understand that once they get out of school they're going to pay taxes on their income, property, and purchases. These taxes pay for many things they will never see any benefit from as well as things they don't agree with. Yeah it sucks to see your money go to something you could careless about but that's the way the world works. I could understand this more if there was a large increase being proposed, but they seem to be against paying any fees at all. Gillin has stated he doesn't want to raise students fees, but instead wants to grow the budget through giving and sponsorship's. Students taking a stand on not increasing would make sense, but to completely remove them at this time is crazy.

Re: Comments from new SGA President
Simple solution, this Fall, have 5,000 students, first come, first serve get in free due to their athletic fees being paid. Fill up the other 25,000 "seats" (including the bank) at the $37.50 I paid last year. Coupled with the $60.00/seat being charged for the Miami game, and we're home free. Coupled with TV money, we should be able to "balance the budget" and fund the so called minor sports...icing on the cake. Only half sarcastic.JTApps1 wrote:I just get tired of this coming up every few years from a small group that doesn't have interest in sports. I could agree with you if the fans were pulling their weight. The fans are not. Plain and simple we are placing our entertainment cost on the backs of 17 yr old kids.JTApps1 wrote:I just get tired of this coming up every few years from a small group that doesn't have interest in sports. We get a new crop of idealistic 18 year-olds every year.....When they get their first paycheck and see the taxes come out they become idealistic Republicans.....some conservative Democrats and Indy's.

This is about means, not about age. Sure in the real world people pay for benefits they don't use. But they also (theoretically at least) pay somewhat according to their means. Not so much the case here.Gonzo wrote:College freshmen are 18 years old.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the increase has been in line with inflation, to be honest, and I applaud those who have kept their word. Would it have been nice to keep an adjustment at $0? Sure. It wasn't going to go down, and we know that -- no matter how much money flowed in.

Re: Comments from new SGA President
The complaint doesn't seem to be about lack of funds so much as not wanting to pay for something they don't utilize which is why I made the comments I did. Plus, lets not forget they all knew the costs associated with attending App when they agreed to enroll. There are options out there without these fees.97grad wrote:This is about means, not about age. If they need some extra cash nobody is stopping them from getting a PT job, or cutting back spending in other areas to pay for school. I worked 20-30 hours a week while in school to help pay for housing and food costs, and many other have done the same.

I thought this was interesting so I did a quick Google.TheMoody1 wrote:My son is at Clemson and pays $0 in athletic fees. However the total fees and tuition are $6,900 a semester for in state. The $3,200 at App is a bargain, so maybe they should lower the athletic fee and raise tuition.
Clemson in-state tuition and fees - $13,446
App State in-state tuition and fees - $6,553
We hear the same complaining at Charlotte. It always amuses me when a 20 year old waves his iPhone at me, while wearing a North Face down parka and $125 Nikes, with a Mac Book Air on the table next to his third $6 latte of the day, and tells me things cost too much.
