It appears that Ga Southern may approach 30,000 students with the proposed merger with Armstrong State in Savannah.

The schools are 50 miles apart with separate identities now...I question the viability of this idea.

A friend's daughter plays soccer at Armstrong State. Of course, they're concerned about what happens with soccer. The bigger deal is that GaSo doesn't have the major than Lauren's in. It's tough to see this having a positive outcome.

They aren't shutting down ASU, just merging. I would assume programs that Armstrong State has that GS doesn't, would remain.

That would make sense but hasn't been made very clear yet. Scholarship dollars and coaching are up in the air at the moment, too. Just lots of uncertainty about what exactly this will look like.

The state of Georiga has been doing this alot in conjunction with the Georgia Board of Regents to contain costs. A year or two ago, Georiga State grew by a similar merger.

The Armstrong campus will likely be GaSo-Savannah Campus. This will likely be the new home for GaSo's nursing program as most GaSo nursing students currently do their clincal work in Savannah.

As you noted, Ga State and Ga Perimeter were consolidated early last year. Perimeter was not permitted to maintain its own athletic program. They suspended all athletic recruiting and will not field any teams in '17. Ga State picked up a *gulp* mere 23,000 students in the pact.

Armstrong has a noted athletic tradition in D-II. I'd hope they'd get special dispensation to maintain their athletic program. GaSo would pick up about 7,000 students in this deal.

Wasn't there talk or at least a thread on here about the consolidation of some UNC system schools? I'm not at all well versed on the issue but at face value that wouldn't seem like a terrible idea.

This has been made official.

In addition to the Ga State merger, Kennesaw State absorbed a nearby Polytechnic school a few years ago too.

Before the mergers the Georgia system consisted of 35 schools. They are now down to 27. The NC Legislature was all on it in the beginning, but with only 16 schools (17th is high school UNC school of science and math) it really doesn't make much sense as it would not accomplish significant cost savings. They also wanted to close Elizabeth City State but backed down after pressure.

Merging ECS into ECU mainly because of ECS enrollment struggles could make sense. Merging UNC Pembroke and Fayetteville State due to their proximity and similar size may make also make sense.

NC A&T and UNCG are too strong of brands individually (primarily A&T). I suppose NC A&T could absorb WSSU which is not as strong of an institution.

Let's just hope that the Legislature doesn't decide to merge the NC Community Colleges into the UNC System schools.
