Expectations from here on out

Unread post by ASU2416 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 5:35 pm

With 6 games left in the regular season, 4 of which are at home where we are 7-3 (4-1 in conference), what do you guys think this team will do? All 6 left are winnable, but it will be interesting to see what actually happens.

2/11 vs. Furman
2/14 @ Elon
2/17 @ UNCG
2/20 vs. The Citadel
2/28 vs. Samford
3/2 vs. Chattanooga

3/8-3/11 @ SoCon Tourney

I'm thinking 3-3 is likely, but we have a shot at 4-2. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I expect 5-1, the only loss being @ Elon. As bad as we are, Furman and The Citadel are worse, and Samford and Chattanooga were two games we should've had at their places. Heck, we thoroughly controlled the second half of the Elon game in Boone, so that one is winnable, though both teams have had very different fortunes since that meeting.

This is, of course, assuming that the players and coaches realize they are still in great position to get a tournament bye, and since no team has ever won a SoCon tourney title without a bye, at least we'd have history on our side headed to Asheville.

At the same time, I can easily see this as the particular moment where the team hits a wall and mails it in. As with everything else surrounding this program, you just never know what you're going to get. I'd like to think that since they bounced back from one beatdown from Davidson already this season, they'll do it again.

I'm going to play optomist and say we got 5-1 and get the bye. That should be our expectations. I don't think we win at Elon. We SHOULD go 4-0 at home. UTC is a terrible road team and Samford is beatable. Furman and El Cit are just awful. UNCG is a Sunday afternoon game which is a complete toss-up, depending on which teams show up (both us and them). Elon is the only game I don't think we win because Elon holds serve very well in Alumni Gym.

I hope you guys are right and we go 5-1. This team is hard to predict, so I think that' is certainly possible. Just don't know which team will show up. The home heavy schedule is certainly favorable.

If we get the #4 seed that will put us in Davidson's side of the bracket.

I'm expecting 4-2, or possibly 3-3 if we let Saturday's debacle turn into two losses tonight. I don't think we get out of the cracker box at Elon with a win and while all the others are very winnable, I just don't see us taking all 5.

All things considered, going 4-2 down the stretch and finishing 10-8 in conference isn't too bad. We need the bye to have any shot at making a deep run in the tournament.

Regardless of how the brackets work out, we aren't getting out of Asheville without going through Davidson. They are on a different level than every team in the SoCon and I'm not expecting somebody else to upset them for us on a neutral court. If we want to go dancing, we'll have to upset the fightin' McKillops, which would take one full game of us actually committing to defense and shooting lights out.

My expecation is 5-1 with a slip up somewhere (most likely Elon), which would finish 11-7 in conference, but I wouldn't be susprised to see us finish 4-2. Of course I want us to go 6-0 but I think Elon will be too tough of a task. I think if we went 4-2 (10-8) that would be good enough to get the 4th seed anyway, however. We just need to take care of our own business and not worry about anyone else from here on out. If we worry about ourselves, limit our mistakes, and take care of our mistakes when we have them, we will get the 1st round bye in Asheville.

The only team that can beat Appalachian State from here on out is Appalachian State. We've proven we can beat Elon and UNCG, albeit at home, but we have beaten them both by double digits. Elon plays smart ball and UNCG still has some talent. Furman and The Citadel are cellar dwellers this year, and we could have easily won at Samford and Chattanooga. Maybe my expectations are inflated, but I firmly believe the only team that can beat us is ourselves in these last six.
