Marshall info/tips for away game

Unread post by canes_mj » Sat Jun 22, 2024 1:48 pm

My oldest son is to the age where I'm going to start taking him to one major away game trip per year...so we're doing Marshall this year as it works out best logistically.

For those been before, any info/tips on Huntington? Thing to do, places to eat, places to go (or avoid); we're flying in, because he loves airplanes; and planning to stay downtown near campus near the river. According to search, visitor team sections are 101 and 103...correct? Are there typically App Alumni tailgates, and if so where?

Thanks and hope to see some of you there,
MJ

You aren’t asking this but the team stays in Charleston. Last time there was a meetup at the Delta Hotel in Downtown. Relatively easy walk to the stadium. You pass through campus and you can see the on campus memorial to the plane crash victims. The memorial off campus is pretty moving. I’m not sure what sections are visitors but they are the ones closest to the field house side of the stadium.

There was a meetup for alumni in downtown Huntington prior to the game. Stephanie and her crew do a good job of putting these events together.

Marshall in the 90's was not a hospitable place to play (talk to any player from that era), but I imagine their fanbase has mellowed. It isn't one of the prettiest towns in the state, but I'm sure you can find a few of those in the area. I would rate it higher than Monroe, Jonesboro, Statesboro, and Norfolk.

Any away game is great to share with your kids and a neat idea to pick one a year to explore different parts of the country. When you go to GS, go straight to Savannah!

When visiting many of our conference foes it makes you appreciate how special the area around our school really is.

Marshall is a great trip! Hunnington is a cool town, and their fans are friendly for the most part.

If go early, go to New River Gorge National Park. Neither Huntington or Charleston are "destination" locations. Depending on game time. You can do the Marshall things related to the unfortunate event day of game. They are definitely something to see while visiting Huntington. However, I would find somewhere else to stay that is more fun. Just my opinion.

Backyard Pizza and Raw Bar in downtown Huntington. Best pizza I've ever had.

Huntington rated higher than Norfolk? Norfolk, to me due to my proximity to the area, includes the surrounding "cities" to include Suffolk, Chesapeake, Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, etc. Hungtington does not hold a candle to the entirety of that area.

Marshall is fine but I was underwhelmed. A lot of commuter students and the atmosphere just feels how you'd expect West Virginia to feel.
