Scrimmage Yesterday
Was able to watch about 30 or 40 minutes before they moved it inside because of thunder. The defense is stingy. Offense looked awesome the first drive when they had the jet burning. Lots to look forward to this year.

Re: Scrimmage Yesterday
Really hope the players are picking up Woody's scheme. Which players/position do you feel will benefit the most from his slant 50 approach? It seemed with the Terriers that the DE and OLB were their brightest spots.
Can you tell if Dale Jones has bought in and is able to relay Woody's message across to the DL? I feel that will be an interesting dynamic to watch over the course of the season. I believe Jones did a good job as the position coach for the LBers and I'm hopeful he can have the same All-Conference/All-American type production with the DL players.

If the offense stays healthy, my bet is that they can average OVER 40 PPG this season. Other than UGA, this O will wear everybody else down early in the second half.

Re: Scrimmage Yesterday
The dynamics in the defensive coaching staff are tough, but I am hoping that whatever egos are involved are knitted into an effective unit. Jones was put in a very difficult position, and it takes a lot of character to accept these changes, but this could be a really good thing. Coach Woody's schemes always manages to keep the play in front of the D, and made it tough to get the big play. That was true even when they were defending a very athletic offense (App or SC for example). I'm excited to see what happens this year. I just hope we make it through the learning curve quickly, cause I want to win the opener at Montana.
Thanks for the update. I am really excited about our future!

Re: Scrimmage Yesterday
While Football 101 is certainly a social setting, it's been pretty obvious in years past when coaches were together or not. It seemed like the defensive coaches were definitely all on the same page and really enjoying each other's company that night. Dale Jones seemed more lighthearted than in previous years making me wonder if he's simply enjoying what he does best without the ultimate pressure of being DC. Of course, I may be totally off base here. Game time will tell ...

I think when our "D" buys in/learns Woody's defense, we will be awesome. Look how good they did last year playing South Carolina. And we have better athletes than Wofford....

i think they have bought in. from what little they knew of it back in the spring, they sure seemed to be effective in the scheme.AppState89 wrote:I think when our "D" buys in/learns Woody's defense, we will be awesome. "Stingy" has been the word I've heard regarding the defense. They're going to more of a 50 slant for option teams while keeping the base 3-4 for a catch-all.

One of the benefits of leaving the Socon nobody has mentioned - a 66% reduction in games vs option teams. This season's schedule though, four on the slate due to the OOC game vs Charleston Southern

I think it was a brilliant move on Satterfield's part to get Woody as the DC. However, let's see how the defense performs before we declare him the messiah. I think too many of us just assume his presence will instantly transform our defense. I do believe he is the right guy for the job but too often we proclaim this player or coach to be the one before a down is played.

Re: Scrimmage Yesterday
I always withold judgement on any coach in any sport, position or head, until they've been in place for three years. By then they have the type of player they like in their system and have three years worth of recruit with most of their kids starting. After that you can begin to tell what you have. I know Coach Woddy has had some great D's in the past and Lord knows we have the athletes at App but can they learn and play in his system? We'll see.hapapp wrote:I think it was a brilliant move on Satterfield's part to get Woody as the DC. However, let's see how the defense performs before we declare him the messiah. Personally I believe we'll be just fine based on reports I've been hearing and knowing the kids we have playing. There will be some mistakes along the way but I don't see them being full game mistakes like we've seen in the past (El Cid and Va Tech come to mind quickly). Based on his history I believe Coach W can and will make in game adjustments. But it's true that we are starting from the ground up and it will take some time for everything to come together. At least we've got a starting point. I'll take that.

The 2012 numbers were beyond bad and trending in that direction several years. Something had to be done. The FBS move made it changes even more urgent.hapapp wrote:I think it was a brilliant move on Satterfield's part to get Woody as the DC. But finishing with a SoCon ring. Satterfield is a miracle worker.Kgfish wrote:The 2012 numbers were beyond bad and trending in that direction several years. Something had to be done.
