Coach Marvin "Red" Hoffman, a member of E.C. Duggins' first team at Appalachian and a member of the NCHSAA Hall of Fame, passed away at his Wilkesboro home on Sunday. Coach Hoffman was my treasured friend and a former professional colleague. Last, but by no means least, he was a dyed-in-the-wool App State Mountaineer. He will be missed by his Appalachian Family. RIP, Coach.

Coach Marvin D. "Red" Hoffman, Sr., age 90, of Wilkesboro died Sunday, September 8, 2013 at his home.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 13 at 2:00 at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Andrew Brown officiating. Burial with full military honors by the US Army will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 Thursday night.

Mr. Hoffman was born in Lincolnton, NC, on April 9, 1923, to June Edward and Edith Helton Hoffman. He was raised by his father and stepmother, Louise Shaffner Hoffman. He was a graduate of Statesville High School, Appalachian State University and received a Masters Degree from Vanderbilt University.

He was a member of Wilkesboro United Methodist. Mr. Hoffman served in the US Army in the 45th Calvary Unit during World War II. He was a Prisoner of War in Italy, Austria, Poland and Germany from June 1, 1944 until April 14, 1945 when he escaped and made his way to Allied Lines. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart for pulling his two wounded sergeants from the battle field.

Coach Hoffman was the former Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Wilkes Central High School from 1952 until 1976 and the former Wilkes County Athletic Director from 1976 until his retirement in 1985. He built a formidable football program at Wilkesboro High from 1948 until 1952. He achieved a career record of 178-98-7 in addition to winning seven conference titles and the 1962 Western North Carolina High School Activities Association crown. Coach Hoffman was named to "The list of 100 Hundred" Coaches To Remember by the NCHSAA in 2013. In 1951, he was assistant coach for the West All-Star Football Game. In 1967, he was named the head coach of NC Shrine Bowl. He was also inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame in 1998.In 2004, he was North Wilkesboro Rotary Club Citizen of the Year.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hoffman was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Moore Hoffman the mother of his four children and his second wife, Ann Maguire Hoffman.

Coach Hoffman is survived by his wife, Barbara Russell Hoffman of 323 Hillcrest Drive, Wilkesboro; two daughters, Kristina H. Armstrong and husband, Robert of Yadkinville and Ann H. Koenig and husband, Craig of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Dexter Hoffman and wife, Christine of Lutz, FL and Eddie Hoffman and wife, Beth of Wilkesboro; five grandchildren, Dexter Hoffman III, Brian Hoffman, Will Hoffman, Kristy Fowler, Kathryn Armstrong; six great grandchildren.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to United Way of Wilkes, One United Way Building, 910 C Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or to Wilkes Heritage Museum, PO Box 935, Wilkesboro, NC 28697.
