Kind of surprised they're taking it down in this fashion, but it's cool nonetheless.

Had many great nights in that Hall! Couple of bad mornings as well. Stained about two floors of bricks on the side of that sucker.

Like everything else built in Boone (and every other college town) in the last decade, it will no doubt an overly fancy palace paid for with the student loan money future grads, and dropouts, will still be paying off when they're sixty.moehler wrote:pretty cool watching the implosion, question, what are they going to build in its place?

Re: Winkler Hall to be Imploded Sunday morning
Does anyone know the story behind the demolition of Winkler (known as "The Towers" when I lived there my senior year, 74-75)? I know they said it wasn't cost effective to renovate but there have been older dorms remodeled. Just curious.
As a side note - my room is still standing. I lived in the end unit where the opening is on the front side of the building.
The press release showed a 1974 and 2014 picture of Winkler. Of all my trips to Boone since 1975, and there have been many, I never noticed the landscaping change until I looked at each photo up close. When I was in school there was a wall that ran along the edge of the sidewalk. On Friday's we would sit on the wall at the end of the sidewalk, turn up the tunes and drink a few Stroh's. Someone would make a trip to Mountain City and pick up a couple cases because it wasn't sold in NC because of the higher alcoholic content. It appears dirt was brought in and the ground was made level with the sidewalk. Also, due to this change, the steps were completely redone.
