P5 playing at G5

Unread post by Boonegoon » Fri Oct 31, 2014 8:02 am

Getting Wake is a huge step for us and is a game that I grew up going to every year in Winston. While the, possibility of getting ECU and Marshall would be awesome for us they aren't P5 schools. I'm curious what some of you think are reasonable teams to come here in the future. After a quick search this year I found that Colorado played at UMass and Missouri played at Toledo. What do people think?

I think Missouri played at Toledo because Gary Pinkell used to coach there. I could be wrong though.

Troy has hosted a fair share of P5 squads, they are most similar to us. Play in similar sized stadium early in FBS years, not close to any major metropolitan area, and not the most fertile recruiting ground.

ODU & USA have these teams come in annually because of their recruiting ground.

most P5 schools need more than just playing the game to give a G5 school a home game, ie: NC State playing at Old Dominion because they wanted the exposure in the Tide Water area, and were basically using that game as a recruiting trip. I think that makes it tough on us because we really don't have anything else to offer other than the game. Not saying it cant be done, I could see maybe some smaller P5 schools, Duke, Wake again, maybe even State, but we probably, atleast for a long time, will not see any of the established P5 programs. If we have any chance we first must expand the stadium, and become a legitimate top 30 program, unfortunately, both are probably a long way off.

A H&H with Colorado would be a dream for me. They are an hour from the house and if there is a college town as beautiful as Boone than Boulder is a damn close second. I would say Vandy is possible, close drive and SEC bottom feeder. GT has lower attendance/tradition standards and a 4 hour drive. Maybe WV and have a battle of mountaineers though this is far fetched as they have a much richer tradition of winning. I would say any P5 with a really rough record may do it to have a higher win % chance than they would another P5.
Appalachian State, Better than your school since 1899!!!!

The obvious ones are Duke and Wake, of course.

If I were AD, I'd take a shot at Miami. Marquee name, but they don't travel well and will go to G5 teams (already scheduled to play @ A-State, FAU, Cincinnati, Toledo and FIU in the next few years). Plus a lot of people from South Florida own summer homes or cabins in the mountains, so it could be an appealing trip for them.

One that might be possible in a few years would be Va. Tech, as they've been willing to travel to G5s before, and of course it wouldn't be a long trip for them. I'm not sure we could land that one just yet, though.

Others that seem realistic to me are lower-level programs that don't always travel well. For example:

-BC
-Syracuse
-Georgia Tech
-Kansas
-Vanderbilt
-Kentucky

I think that Duke would be next on the list. Then probably looking at another series with Wake don the road. Don't see many other P5 schools wiling to come Now we may be able to get a home and home series with a bigger name P5 school if we agree to play the game in Charlotte in Panther's stadium. I would say we could get a series with UNC, NC State maybe even Clemson or USC if we did this.

But to come to the Rock I would be looking for some AAC series like UCF or ECU, UConn, Houston, all would be really good to have come to the Rock.

I've heard several of the schools others have mentioned in this thread as possible games plus a few not mentioned. I heard about the Wake home and home quite a while ago and was told it was just a matter of making the schedules mesh. I've also heard several money games being talked about for months also, including Penn State, which we all know came about.

The one school I've heard the most concerning a H & H other than Wake has been Ga Tech. When the news of a P5 H & H was told, before Wake was announced, neither would have surprised me due to the mentions. It's also the reason I didn't want to guess yesterday on the money game since so many possibilities had been mentioned and I was busy on the visitors list so there wasn't enough time to call anyone to see. It's safe to say that there will be more of these announcements coming soon.

One thing to mention is that, while none of the farther out OOC games are set in stone as lots can happen to cause schools to have to change things, it's even more possible right now once all the pieces come into to place and once all the lawsuits and monkey wrenches get worked out. The landscape most likely will look a lot different in 3-4 years. How this will impact schedules that far out remains to be seen. Stay tuned and pull the belts up tight as things are far from over.

All the P5 and NCAA pay to play suits, injury suits, and various other things that have popped up in the last couple of years. That's what has stopped movements for now. Once most everything is done and the P5 figure out how the changes affect them, the money, and their bottom line, the changes we've all seen will begin to move again. The P5 will eventually get what they want. The what and when are the only things left to be decided. The one thing that pretty much the the whole college athletics community agrees on is that there is no IF.
