elevate3333: Interview with Newest Mountaineer

Unread post by elevate3333 » Fri Jul 24, 2015 12:39 pm

I spoke with the newest Mountaineer, Chris Favoroso. We discussed his relationship with Coach Holt, how he ended up at App, and his training since last season among other things.

In your interview, the youngster indicates that his offers faded away when recruiters became aware that he was a partial-qualifier; and that's when he made the decision to enroll in a JuCo program. Then, suddenly he hears from USF and everything changed. Now he's committed to ASU and making plans to play in '15.

So what about the "partial-qualifier" status? I thought Satterfield had a "do not consider" policy on those situations. What am I missing here?

Please enlighten me, what exactly does "partial qualifier" mean?

The NCAA link below says it means he can get a scholarship, can practice immediately but cannot play for one full year and is only eligible for 3 more years. I assume it has something to do with his scores and grades.

Exactly. The student can't have it both ways--he's either a qualifier and can play immediately OR he's a non-qualifier and has to sit for a year and lose the year eligibility-wise. I hope that he's done some work over the summer to become a qualifier outright. The article didn't make that clear at all.

We have to look no farther than Boise State to learn that this is a BIG deal. If our folks get careless or misinterpret the NCAA By-Laws inadvertently, the penalties are severe.

I'm going to wait and see if we can get a clarification from the blogger or another interview on one of the recruiting sites before making a judgement. I've heard a different reason entirely why he wasn't on the USF team but not from a source I would consider rock solid. We have not been taking non qualifiers or even academic redshirts or we would have taken several other recruits in the past three years than the ones we have. See Morgan and Miller from this past class as an example. If the list of reported offers that is shown on every site is correct it's hard to believe that it's a grade issue but that's why I always list these as "reported" offers. Hopefully we'll get some more clarification.

Sorry, I just checked in on the status of this conversation.

I did misinterpret the original conversation along with other discussions I had with a coach, and have tried to do my best to correct the error. Chris Favoroso contacted me back to let me know he is a full qualifier, however he was considering Arizona Western because he was not interested in the offers he received, back in February. In the interview he did mention some of those as being from University of South Florida, Lehigh, Navy and Western Kentucky (as he told me those didn't work out, now I understand him to mean it was because he wasn't interested in the offers).

However, I can tell you he is now truly excited to be coming to Boone, and loves everything about the program from the football team to the facilities, and of course Coach Holt.

Once again sorry for the confusion.

So, let me get this straight, you assumed he was a partial qualifier?

No, I was told he was a partial qualifier, and it had also been reported by other sources. When I asked the question it wasn't disputed. It only came out after the article had been printed that this had been a common misperception. I have apologized to Chris Favoroso, and done my best to rectify the error.

I would have been very surprised if he had been a Partial-Qualifier so I"m very glad to hear that's been cleared up. He looks like a beast, a great get, and a great addition to the Appalachian Football family. I look forward to seeing him really put a hurtin on some of the bad guys....especially those stinky, gnat bitten fellas.

Thanks for your efforts in getting clarification. I hope his enthusiasm for football and fine facilities doesn't blind him from being/or becoming a serious student in the classroom. He didn't have much to say about classroom work or time management. Our folks need to get him registered for UCO 1200--First Year Seminar--like pronto! Yesterday, even!
