Ode' To The Rock

I was back in Boone one lovely Spring Day last week. One of my obligatory trips when in Boone during the off season is trip to The Stadium.
So, I asked my wife to drop me off on Jack Branch Dr. while she completed her agenda, leaving me in the most beautiful football facility I have been to. While walking through the seating area and on the turf I began to wax poetic. Here is the result for those interested.

Quiet and serene it sits
in late Spring as those have gone
back to home and family
another school year done.

The phrenetic noises are silent
scoreboard dark and lights not lit
Kidd Brewer Stadium sits in the shadow
of a docile, May sunset.

The playground is undisturbed,
no contenders on the Pitch.
The Arena lies in wait
not a flicker nor a twitch.

But terror resides in that Green Turf
and anger in the yard lines.
The Block A offers warning
to those who have designs

Against the Black and Gold Warriors
who will defend this special bloc.
For behind the sweet and docile look,
The Faithful call it "The Rock"

Many have come to play on this place
Their names familiar to all.
Terriers, Catamounts, Vermen,
They have come to play in the Fall.

Now a new group comes up the Mountain
testing their metal against Yo's gun
Hurricanes, Monarchs, Demon Deacons they come.
We'll show then what a Mountaineer is son!!

Don't forget the Gnats
from Swamp Town, GA
"They came, they saw, they conquerored"
will rarely be their day.

So while it is still Spring time
when I can hear the Woodpecker's knock,
Come Fall, when she bears her teeth,
Sean will say, "Welcome To The Rock!"
