Montana's Hauck Retires
"Dealing with what college football has become is not always enjoyable as a head coach. I just haven't been enjoying it enough. I want to enjoy my career and my job."
"Dealing with agents and the transient nature of this and the lack of forward thinking by young people.."
"But as college football has changed over the last couple of years, I've started to embrace my shelf life ending at some point. I've had more days where I didn't enjoy coming to work very recently."

And now I read that Hauck has just become the defensive coordinator at illinois…the ink hadn’t even dried on his retirement letter.

Re: Montana's Hauck Retires
Everyone has a right to speak their mind on this, and I know a coach at Montana is not making SEC coaching money. Likely not making top G5 money, but he likely has a very good life with his salary. Comments about how the game has changed just does not do much for me.PBR1893-BEER-HAT-GUY wrote: ↑Wed Feb 11, 2026 8:37 amAnd now I read that Hauck has just become the defensive coordinator at illinois…the ink hadn’t even dried on his retirement letter.
And then to sign a very well paid job at Illinois. I am not sure if hypocrite is the word I am looking for. That might be a bit strong. Maybe just an admission a lot of people make a lot of money off the backs of the athletes and they are along for it all would just be a bit more honest and mean more to me.

Re: Montana's Hauck Retires
I read this situation entirely different.
Many coaches enjoy the development of players and relationships that come from the game. That was been stripped from coaches, and at the lower levels even more so. I can only imagine how that feels to have that portion of fulfillment in your job taken away. To throw stones at Hauck is idealistic at best.
The incentives and regulations (or lack thereof) have driven behavior as always.

Re: Montana's Hauck Retires
Follow the money AKA show me the money.
Let's see...head coaching job at FCS school. Larger school, pressure to win, recruiting nightmare, kids leaving every year for more money, constant rebuild mode.....salary 250K- $350K
Assistant/department head at P5 school. Pressure to win on someone else, recruiting pressure on someone else (mostly), easier to recruit,Kids still leave for money but most for playing time and eventually money.... salary 1 million - 2 million at bigger schools with a bigger bankroll.
LSU's defensive coordinator turned down an interview to be head coach of the NY Giants. Current deal $7.5M over 3 years. More money, less stress, more family time.. Less total prestige maybe but a lot less headaches at three times the pay....sign me up

Re: Montana's Hauck Retires
Maybe the money isn’t what got him into coaching or what satisfies him. I would think someone who chose a career in education might consider that to be a possibility. And while the athletes are the stars of the show they are not the only ones involved. It takes a lot of folks to put on those Saturday shows. And without the show there is no money. Maybe it wouldn’t be to much to ask the athletes to show some gratitude to all the folks and institutions that make the show even possible. It’s a two way street.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Wed Feb 11, 2026 8:47 amEveryone has a right to speak their mind on this, and I know a coach at Montana is not making SEC coaching money. Re: Montana's Hauck Retires
Get back to me when the coaches are making professor salaries. DIII coachesmI don't bring up much. A coach commenting on the changes in college athletics, "retires", and then moves to a larger salary seems to be making my point. It may not be the only thing that drives this coach or any coach, but seems to be a good part of it.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 11, 2026 8:02 pmMaybe the money isn’t what got him into coaching or what satisfies him. I would MUCH prefer a sense of school pride and solidarity to the team and not jump around so much from the athletes. I really don't like it. But when the amount of money is at play it needs to be spread around, and athletic fees should be dropped as part of the mix as part of that mix. That and tie scholly money and NIL to staying around for a minimum amount of time. Coaches and AD could lead the way with salary and compensation as well.
We just beat the crap out of GaSo.

Re: Montana's Hauck Retires
Believe it or not I agree with your points. Coaches are paid way too much and facilities have become excessive. If, money is being made off athletics it should be funneled into academics. Athletic departments at universities should operate as non profits. And if they are indeed a source of revenue for the university then that’s great.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Wed Feb 11, 2026 10:06 pmGet back to me when the coaches are making professor salaries. Re: Montana's Hauck Retires
I was looking at Alabama’s revenue statement this morning. Football and men’s basketball made money. All other sports lost money. Women’s basketball lost/cost the most in comparison to revenue gained, baseball was just above that.

I don't understand the pushback. He stated he enjoyed coaching and he has now shed what he said was his problem. He said he no longer enjoyed being a "head coach". What is wrong with what he did?

True. Last I remember, we still live in America and our citizens are free to do things like that.
