Good decision if NC State cares about football. O'Brien could stay at State for 20 years and win 6-8 games a year but he would never have a consistent big winner. With the relative lackluster teams filling up the ACC, it would seem a good hire would have a chance to put together a true winning program.

State will never be better than they are.
College football and basketball is 100% about recruiting. Neither NC State nor UNC will ever be able to get a consistent number of big-time players in their programs for football.
At least he runs a good, clean program and he wins and he has a really good bowl record.
State's last ACC Championship was in 1979. They've had like 8 coaches since then, Dick Sheridan arguably the best of the bunch. Coincidentally, Clemson joined ACC in 1980 (?) and then FSU in the early 90's. Those two schools combine for the lions share of ACC Championships in the last 30 years. Why? BETTER PLAYERS.

This is just State being State. Thinking they're something that they're not.

Clemson has been in the ACC since day 1. I think you are thinking of Ga Tech. Check the timeline at the bottom of the wikipedia link.

I'd have to disagree. (I am NOT a UNC fan)!!!!!!! Mack did a heck of a job recruiting at UNC.....Fedora said in his introduction that he wanted EVER great football player in NC to come to UNC. While you can't win without players....Chizik...you have to have coaches the kids believe in. They (kids) all talk and they all want to win.....(thus a good reason our recruiting was as we see now off a little over the past couple of seasons)....
If NC STATE or UNC wants to win, they can be in the top 10-15 every year in the FBS with a predominance of kids from NC. I do not want them to.....but after watching them against Maryland, if they can get some of the kids they have had in the past to play defense....UNC is going to be pretty good soon!
Go APPS!
While looking up "Chizik"'s name I saw where he was fired!

Yeah, I just don't buy that UNC and NC State can't recruit the talent that is needed and/or have a coach that can field a team to compete in the top 15 rankings in the country. Both schools had multiple years in the top 20 in the 90's. Folks said South Carolina could "never win" and "couldn't recruit the talent needed" before Spurrier. There is plenty of talent for them to get, they just need a coaching staff that goes and gets it.

"Fedora said in his introduction that he wanted EVER great football player in NC to come to UNC. "
He should have kept Kenny Browning if he truly wanted to do this. And I agree, Mack got top talent from NC, SC and VA.

Every great player in NC? He should know that it's not wise to get into recruiting wars with Appalachian State.

Fedora didn't leave much at So. Miss - UNC and State are both football wannabees - they will never be consistently good - they are basketball schools and every good coach knows that ---
