Has WKU hired Petrino as football coach? OMG!

A person familiar with the decision says Western Kentucky has hired Bobby Petrino as its new football coach.

The person says the former Arkansas coach is expected to be introduced at a Monday afternoon news conference. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school has not officially announced Petrino's hiring.

The 51-year-old Petrino replaces Willie Taggart, who left WKU Saturday to become South Florida's coach. Petrino had a 34-17 record at Arkansas.

He was fired by Arkansas in April for a "pattern of misleading" behavior following a motorcycle accident. Petrino had an affair with former Razorback football staffer Jessica Dorrell, who he had given $20,000 in gifts. Petrino said initially he was the only person on the motorcycle but later admitted to Dorrell's presence.

Bobby Petrino returning as new Western Kentucky football coach

Hey, state of Kentucky! Bobby Petrino's coming back.

Former Arkansas and Louisville head football coach Bobby Petrino is making his return after a one-year hiatus, according to Hilltoppers beat writer Chad Bishop and multiple confirming reports, including SB Nation's Steven Godfrey.

Western Kentucky will announce Bobby Petrino as its new head football coach at 4 p.m. today.

Bobby Petrino to WKU. Just got a confirmation.
— Steven Godfrey (@38Godfrey) December 10, 2012

WKU didn't have a bowl practice scheduled Monday. Interim staff is gone recruiting and players are off. Both groups are stunned by news.
— Steven Godfrey (@38Godfrey) December 10, 2012

Petrino was fired by Arkansas after being caught lying about his affair with an employee, which was brought to light due to his wrecking a motorcycle with her aboard. He also has a very well-earned reputation as a job-hopper. But other than that, he's good to go!

He would be inheriting a program that went 7-5 in 2011 and 2012. The Hilltoppers earned a berth in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl this year, but lost coach Willie Taggart to South Florida.

Petrino was the head coach at Arkansas from 2008 to 2011 and compiled a 34-17 record, taking the Razorbacks to three bowl games in the process. Prior to taking the Arkansas job, Petrino had a brief stint as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, and before that, he spent four seasons as head coach of the Louisville Cardinals. Louisville is in Kentucky, and his exit from there was mighty awkward, to say the least. Time to remake some friends!

He is 75-26 in eight seasons as a college head coach and is known as one of college football's best offensive play callers.

Shows that WKU is serious. If App gets a call up, this "national search" while hiring within stuff isn't going to fly. Time to start acting like a big time university if that's the angle we're going for.

And I don't mean this about the SS hire, if it happens. I think he'd be a good choice here at the onset.

If you change the word serious to desperate, I'll agree with you. And Petrino is desperate too. Petrino can coach and he will win games, but at what cost to the university and the program? Arkansas is in shambles because of him. This just shows me that WKU is willing to sell their soul to the devil for a few wins.

How about we wait until his second motorcycle accident before throwing those stones.

:P

And with App's track record lately, from Gonzo's piece, we don't have much room to be casting aspersions.

We have PR failures, no doubt. What we don't have, at least that I am aware of, are people with Petrino's reputation. Huge difference.

Petrino got what he wanted, a foot back in the coaching door. WKU got what they wanted, a name coach. They can have each other. I wouldn't have made the hire and I am glade it wasn't us that did it.

shows that you can be a scum, lowlife person, but if you can coach, someone is desperate enough to hire you. WKU administration is either desperate, idiots, or a combination of both. I guarantee the minute he walked after the press conference, after of course, telling everyone that this is his "dream job", and he cant wait to spend the rest of his coaching years at WKU, he turned to his agent, and told him, "the first chance, get me the hell out of this rathole university, idiots.

Really, what kind of parent would send his son off to play for scumbag like this? I don't care how many wins this douche can pull off. There are lots of coaches out there winning football games that also happen to be people worthy of looking up to. If I had a son with Football abilities, I'd want him somewhere where he'd learn to be a MAN.

Yeah. Arkansas is in such shambles - they just hired the back-to-back Big Ten Champs' coach away.

I am a Falcons fan, so I obviously have no love for Petrino - but the guy can flat out coach. I would honestly say there are only 2 or 3 college coaches who are as good as he is at coaching offense and delivering wins...and WKU got him for a song.

And to call WKU desperate is pretty ridiculous. Everyone and their mother knew Taggart was probably out the door after this year, especially with the remarkable turnaround he's led. Their AD said they started looking at names in October.

I agree that the guy is a scumbag - but that doesn't mean he should be blackballed from coaching ever again...as much as that would make me chuckle endlessly.

whats really sad is Petrino knows that as long as he can coach, it doesnt matter how he acts in public, just short of committing a serious crime, he can get away with any kind of outragous behavior. This guy has no ethics, morals, and the worst part is he is arrogent and selfish to the point where he doesnt care about if he hurts people close to him. WKU is fooling themselves if they believe he is going to stay long enough to take the program to the next level, he already has one foot out the door. I bet within 2 years he is gone.

You're fooling yourself if you think they don't realize that. Hell...Ark.St. Hired lesser names and still have had to hire a new coach 2 years running. Life in the SunBelt...

You have to be joking. What makes WKU "serious"? No way you can be serious if you are "hiring within stuff", right?

Where is the face palm thing when I need it?

Well, they did take a top 5 program and go 4-8, or something like that, this year. But they do have a lot of money and they used it to get a guy who may turn it around quickly.

Re: Petrino, I don't care how well he coaches Xs and Os, I want a coach with a little integrity; someone who will set a positive example. Whatever they paid for him was too much, in my opinion.

WKU took the easy way. They hired a guy desperate for any job knowing full well that if he has any success at all he's gone in a heartbeat. If that's what they want then good for them. I am glad it wasn't my school that pulled such a stunt.
