Texas/OU to SEC?

Unread post by canes_mj » Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:02 am

I'm sure you've all seen this. They flirted with leaving before; I think it's going to happen this time. Apparently they've told the Big 12 they won't renew their tv contracts with the conference, which expire in 2025.

So...thoughts on the domino effect to follow this, and how it may impact App? Who will the Big 12 poach to replace them? This may be our best shot to get to the AAC.

The domino effects will be great and I think it could impact every college football team in one way or another. I see this as the start of the super conferences. No way the Big 12 can survive without Ok and Tx so those remaining 8 teams will need to find a home and that will be hard for some of them. I envision the other 3 remaining Power Conferences taking their choices to get to 16 teams. Some may choose to fill the spot with a G5 but I am not so sure about that. A big question I have is what effect this will have on the playoff expansion? If all 64 P4 teams are in 4 super conferences, is there still a push for a 12 team playoff? I mean, with conference title games and everything it would essentially start out as an 8 team playoff every year with the conference champs facing off against each other for the national title. Do the new super conferences even play G5 teams or do they play their out of conference games against other super conference foes so that the regular season continues to matter and each conference champ has played a whale of a schedule with 12 P4 opponents? I could really see this as the beginning of the eventual relegation of G5 being on a completely different division then the 64 team P4 super conferences. In that case, do the G5 conferences go to more regional mode to increase fan interest for greater home gates and money savings on travel? There are so many ways this could go. I just hope our school is thinking about all the scenarios and reaching out to other like minded schools looking for potential consensus for when the trickle down effects hit us.
