Western Kentucky to leave the Sun Belt for somewhat greener pastures in C-USA

(USA Today Sports Images)Maybe Conference USA is significantly better than the Sun Belt, for reasons that are tough to see. The Sun Belt certainly isn't getting stronger, with Florida Atlantic, Florida International, North Texas and Middle Tennessee leaving to C-USA.

But while the Sun Belt is taking hits, Conference USA isn't a powerhouse either. With so many other teams making the move, however, Western Kentucky is following suit.

Western Kentucky will announce its move to Conference USA sometime this week, the Bowling Green Daily News first reported.

WKU will start competing in C-USA in 2014, the paper reported. It has been in the Sun Belt since 1982, and its football program moved from the Gateway Conference to the Sun Belt in 2009.

The Bowling Green Daily News lists the new C-USA, in addition to the schools mentioned above, as Charlotte, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Mississippi, Alabama-Birmingham, Texas-El Paso and Texas-San Antonio.

Western Kentucky might do pretty well in that league, considering it has a coach who has won before. It's also a memorable anniversary today for WKU coach Bobby Petrino:

It's April Fool's Day. Or, as Arkansas fans will better remember it from now on, the anniversary of Bobby Petrino's motorcycle accident.
