Georgia Tech to Big Ten?

Unread post by Yosef » Fri Nov 30, 2012 11:35 am

Looks like there's a lot of rumblings about Georgia Tech going to the Big Ten, which opens the door for another team to get plopped (UCONN?) into the ACC from the Big East, which could keep this merry go round going. It's a very interesting time of the year and obviously tons of rumors flying around. This would only further increase Apps chances but I have to imagine something needs to happen this round of realignment over the next year or we'll get stuck in another moratorium.

Academically, a great fit for Tech. Geographically - not so much. On the other hand - Tech struggles to sell tickets against all but UGA, FSU and Clemson...so, joining a league where you'd be getting OSU, UM, PSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, etc. coming to town could be good for business.

I say that not only because fans would get excited to see them play those teams - but many of those schools have sizeable Atlanta fanbases. There are at least 3 places here that claim to be "Ohio State" bars.

For us - we need to be working the phones. SunBelt could lose another school to CUSA because CUSA loses another school to The Big East, who loses another school to The ACC, who may still lose another school to the Big 10 (BC, anyone?).

I honestly think we need to offer JMU, GSU, and App as a package deal to either CUSA or SunBelt.

Why is it a great fit academically?

Georgia Tech is a member of the Association of American Universities. All members of the Big 10(1?) are members of the AAU. In fact, they will not take a school that isn't in the AAU.

If the ACC does, in fact implode, Duke, UNC-CH and Uva. are the other three ACC schools that are AAU members. The Big 10(1?) may take them.
