Old Big East to be renamed American Athletic Conference.

Even though numbers don't really mean that much any more I wonder if they decided to leave off the 12 just in case they decide on adding more.

Read recently that some Canadian universities were thinking of petitioning for NCAA membership. In fact, I think one already has, maybe Simon Fraser Univ. Maybe the AAC is waiting to take on a few of those. They are, after all, completely untapped television markets.

They can call it whatever they like, but after Cincy and UCONN bolt, they are basically the old CUSA. As they say, "You can put a kickstand on grandma, but it doesn't make her a motorcycle."

I was under the impression Canadians do not give out scholly's for athletics. Maybe I am wrong. The article mentions S-F going DII, and not DIII.

I think adding some Canadian Universities would be awesome. As long as they play by the same rules our institutions do and don't have any advantages given to them by their Govt. Also, I like the American Athletic Conference. It doesn't limit them to a geographic region or type of institution. Its fresh and new. Most people will call it the American Conference which sounds really patriotic. I like it.

I agree with you about the name but it does appear to be just a "rebranding" of CUSA. Most of the schools in that conference are former CUSA members and most have been hoping a Big East move for some time. I can see how it can be a letdown for them. But the current members are not to blame, it was the Catholic U's that decided to leave and take the name. Not sure there was a better alternative that would have made the remaining members happy. I hate the phrase "it is what it is" but it works in this instance.

Wow. Almost literally CUSA 2.0.

That's a pretty generic sounding name. After 3 years of reshuffling all the CUSA schools did was change their name and add UCONN and Navy. I feel bad for Southern Miss.

Ah, the Advanced Audio Coding League (

Sounds like a good name in a compressed time frame to me.
