Favorite High Country Restaurant
If you attended App, what was your favorite place to eat while in school compared to now?
I always loved to eat at Red Onion while I was living in Boone...but now that I only get to visit occasionally I find myself heading straight for places like Casa Rustica, Town Tavern Blowing Rock, or The Pedalin Pig (always found it better quality than Woodlands)
Am interested to hear everyone else's favorite munching spot in Boone or surrounding areas!

What's your go-to there? People have always told me to go, but I have never made it. Might have to try that next visit!

I worked at the BI (aka Wheel of Death) during my days in the 70s. It paid my power bill when I lived in a trailer in BR. I remember the Big E....Then rest his soul, there was Sollicetos across from the old Depot.

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
I had inexpensive tastes (and budget) as a student. A lot of my faves are gone now. Probably my #1 go-to was Murphy's. Also receiving votes: Boone Drug, Los Arcos, Elizabeth's, Boone Bagelry, Katie's Pretzels, the hot dog counter next to the King St. theater. (I also frequented Blimpie a lot.)
Now: Black Cat, Coyote Kitchen, Lost Province, Comeback Shack, King St. Creamery. I also make a visit to Insomnia and/or Appalachia Cookie Co. whenever I'm in town.

Probably my favorite stop that is now gone was Wolfies on King St. The tiniest little sandwich shop ever, but those things were good!EastHallApp wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 1:56 pmI had inexpensive tastes (and budget) as a student. As a student...
Breakfast night at Welborn or the pizza spot they had in Trivette. If I really wanted to feel like a baller, McAllister's or Sunday brunch at Broyhill.
Now that I have some money...
Eseeola (Shout out to Brandon Wilson and the now retired John Blackburn) and The Best Cellar (Shout out to Rob and Lisa).

93 to 95 in grad school. Wife and I special date night was Casa Rustica.
For every day or evening including spirits, we would go with the Macados as we could walk from the Mountaineer apartments.
As hard liquor was not allowed in Boone at the time..it was Tijuana Fats in Blowing Rock.
Currently - breakfast at Melanie's and dinner at Proper...

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
While I was there Boone Bagelry, Los, and Black Cat (just the last year). I should also say Speckled Trout and Blimpie because of people I knew that worked that/discounts.
Now wife loves Peppers, Black Cat when we don't have the picky kids, and still Boone Bagelry for breakfast.

In the past it was definitely Sollecitos. The best pizza ever!! Now we enjoy Booneshine, for both food and their beers, and of course Comeback Shack.

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
For a more serious response (although I did and still do love Bo's), I ate lunch at the soup and salad bar at the Pizza Parlour (where Red Onion is now)....at least I think that's what it was called. We also loved eating at the Mountain House for family type meals. When the parent's came to visit and were paying, we liked Makoto's.
I've never been a foodie so these places were generally picked because of the value component (except Makoto's). Makoto's was a novelty at the time since Japanese cuisine wasn't nearly as common as it is now.
In trying to think of current "favorites" I'm a bit embarrassed and I've come to the realization that I need to stop being such a cheap skate when I'm in town and take the wife to a better class of restaurant. I see some good suggestions above. In my defense, when I'm in town, I'm usually either camping (grill my own steaks) or tailgating, so eating out hasn't been a big priority. We do like Peppers.

Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
It was one of those bait-and-switches too, where at first they were just like "We're just changing the name, it's still the same place you love!" and then a little while later "We've made some exciting updates to the menu!"
Just install a working soap dispenser in the restroom, get some mold remediation and leave the rest alone...
