"The “Mountaineer” is a familiar logo in Western North Carolina, representing Tuscola High School in Haywood County and Appalachian State University. While the schools are very different, they've ended up using the same logo. Now, App State wants Tuscola to make some changes."

All 4 my kids played soccer and when we would play Tuscola I always just assume they had permission to use the AppState logo. They were using the old '70s version up until the point that we brought back the updated version of that same logo and they switched to it. That article is certainly written as a homer version by saying that both schools use the same logo; no, the high school flat out pulls our logo off the internet and uses it.

Tuscola also uses Tennessee’s “T” logo. Dont EVER expect an unbiased a fair story from WLOS. Quite possibly the worst “news” station in the country.
GO APPS!!

Yeah that is the truth. They are horrible. But TV news is bad all the way around it's all sensationalism and ridiculousness in order to create something that is riveting enough to keep you watching the stupid thing.

Meh, can't blame the high school coach. He has $0 budget and 0 time to create something. This low-level pirating is rampant. At least we have a logo that is pirating worthy. The old Gordon Fisherman didn't have that problem.

Mitchell HS uses something pretty darn close as well, just not the same colors.

Unless you flip it around
Here’s another one associated with Mitchell in recent years.

OK - here's one - Apex HS uses the Block A with Cougars in script where APP has Mountaineers - and their colors are black and gold. I don't really know how any of these "trademarks" work - would appreciate any info on this

The logo can look similar, but it must have at a minimum, three discernible differences. Im not an expert but the differences to me are the Font style of the A, The script is different, and the color scheme and outline are different.

Apple Valley Middle School, a local school for me in Hendersonville, was told by FU that they have to change their logo as well. I always associate the diamond with the F with furman, but apparently they use the logo below sometimes as well.

The Tuscola things pretty bad that they just flat out pulled our logo off the internet and then when we changed our logo they flat out pulled that logo off the internet. And now they're trying to argue in the public opinion that they've been using it for as long or longer than we have which is totally BS.

I understand the logo trademark issue and the need to not let it be used willy-nilly but to harass a middle school or high school is just plain ludicrous. Yes they're copying our logo and mascot but it's a high school. It's not like they're taking hundreds or thousands from our coffers. Now if they were using them to make money and deliberately sell them for profit then yes they owe ASU some money or need to stop. After 38 years in public school athletics they're not making bank (most always end the year in a huge deficit) so a logo fight is the last thing they need. Funny....no one complains about schools using a tiger paw for their logo. We have some schools in SC whose nickname is Gamecocks; no one from Columbia is griping to them.

I guess the question is were they harassed or asked to cease and desist? I agree that there is an opportunity for some good will between the University and the high school, but where does goodwill cross a line into abuse of privilege?
Side question, do the high schools that use the gamecock logo wear black/garnet/white?

I didn't really think Universities generally cared about high schools / grade schools using their logos (or versions). I get the idea of protecting the trademark, but those schools aren't impacting the brand or stealing revenues at all. They aren't in competition with Universities. I could even believe it could build good will with some young folks. I know Northwestern HS in Rock Hill using the diamond (Furman). Richmond Drive Elementary uses the Clemson paw print.
Even at the college level, Gardner Webb used to copy the Georgia Uniforms exactly (including the "G"). I believe that was done with consent, but it continued until GWU moved up to DI (FCS) at which time they were asked to change it. Hard for me to get upset about a HS using the Mountaineer or Block A.

My understanding is they asked and were given permission to use it.

That shade of purple reminds me of those mimeograph machines from back in my elementary school days. I could actually SMELL those pictures.

I'd think soft enforcement, which is exactly what this sounds like, is very appropriate. Precedent is important. You can't completely look the other way on some and expect to enforce with others.
