My football Mt Rushmore are Armanti, John Settle, Dexter Coakley, and Dino Hackett. Been watching App football for 50 years and there are a lot of great players but to me these are at the top.

Football: Larry Hand, Armanti, Dexter, John Settle
Football aside: Coach Jim Brakefield mainly because he was at the helm during the transition from NAIA and the Carolinas Confernce to the NCAA Division 1 and the SoCon
Soccer: Emmanuel Udogu, Thompson Usiyan, Tony Suarez, Vaughn Christian
Men's Basketball: Darryl Robinson, Bobby, Tony Searcy, Tony Gray
Women's Basketball: Janet Gordon, Jane Albright, Linda Robinson, Valorie Whiteside (RIP)
Baseball: Mike Ramsey, Ron Hodges, Frank Lovrich
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Could pick your baseball crew from this article.

Seagle becomes the eighth player in App State baseball history to make the Major Leagues, joining Don Cardwell, Ron Hodges, John Pychea, Mike Ramsey, Coakler Triplett, Jeffrey Springs and Jaylin Davis.

Cardwell is the only App player to pitch a no hitter in MLB.

Apologies if I'm derailing the convo by mentioning non-athletic folks, but some names need to be named:

People who will NEVER make the list
  • John Thomas
  • Frank Borkowski
  • Sheri Everts
People who should DEFINITELY make the list
  • Ken Peacock

Thompson Usyian was the best athlete I saw in Boone.
Tommy was the best athlete I ever saw or met. I played with him and against him in Vaughan Christian's soccer PE class. When I played center fullback on defense he would either back me up almost to the net and fire away. If I tried to attack, he would chip the ball over my head and run past me. Couldn't stop him. People toss around the term world class athlete a lot, he was.
They're were some other great players on that team too, but none could match Tommy. RIP old friend.

I think when looking at this you have to separate achievements from athletic ability. We've had some great athletes that didn't snag a ton of achievements and visa versa. Cory Lynch did a ton for us but isn't in the top 20 Apps in athletic ability. An opposite example is Travaris Cadet. Probably one of the best raw athletes to step on campus, but didn't grab a ton of individual achievements. Also I see a lot of nostalgia floating around. Keep in mind the competition differences when some of yall start reminiscing about watching some guy play in the 1800s.

He proved himself as a world class athlete , as I have said on many occasions. I followed his exploits as best I could given the times post graduation. He was remarkable.

Interesting takes. This could go in any direction- best 4 football players, basketball players, soccer, non athletes, etc. You could simply go with the best App representatives to encompass the whole gamut. Can't really go wrong. I often enjoy debates/discussions about HOF type players. For me it's not all about longevity or stats it's the eye test. For football it starts with AE but we've certainly had dudes who were simply special and fun to watch regardless of our level of competition or conference affiliation. Same with the other sports. I'd heard over the years about the soccer player mentioned. That had to be cool to watch him play.

There was I think a week in the NFL preseason years ago when Travaris Cadet led the league in yards, catches, and touchdowns. It pops up in my Facebook memories every year.

Time for me to be uber pedantic. The official name is Howard Knob according to the USGS. A fact that very few seem to know.
That would be a great porn name
