App State says its primary goal is to serve the people in rural NC. In order to do this App needs to reflect the values of rural NC. I would love to see a chancellor who would truly embrace the mission of educating the children of rural NC and take pride in doing just that. NC has nothing to be embarrassed about. We don’t need to be anything but NC. Embrace the people and the culture of NC and offer degrees that prepare students for real jobs.AtlAppMan wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 12:26 pmThis may not be PC but I don’t want a Woke Chancellor like Harvard. I do want proper balance between academics and athletics. Students need to feel safe while attending App State and focus on preparing themselves for professional life in the real world. I want a leader that provides all that and doesn’t wilt in the line of fire.

Re: Hold on to your hats ….
Who's making him apologize for it? The idea seems to be getting nothing but support here, with people piling on about "DEI hires" and so forth.mike87 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 1:33 pmSad that you have to almost apologize for saying this. Spot on though. We need a solid, middle of the road hire who can stand up to the BS from either side. I felt like Everts accomplished that and the hate was universal. As to the tunnel, in my day it wasn't bad. Today's culture could easily have taken it to the extreme. I'm not on campus so I don't know. Suspect the loudest complainers are not on campus any longer either.AtlAppMan wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 12:26 pmThis may not be PC but I don’t want a Woke Chancellor like Harvard. This is the kind of crap that certain political elements use to stir up their base and make them feel victimized even though 99.9% of the population have zero reason to give a crap who the president of Harvard is.

I'm sure you're not the only one. Speaking for myself, I found them to be an memorable part of campus culture, and I strongly dislike the plan to replace them. Sure, I've seen stuff I disagreed with and even found offensive in there at times. But that's kind of the point of "freedom of expression."appstate24 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 1:43 pmAm I the only person who couldn’t care less about the free expression tunnels? Feels like I’m in the minority, but I truly don’t care one way or the other. If we are being honest, they could be an eyesore at times.

The students cared enough about the tunnels that App State Police have been seen constantly around them. This was after Everts called the pushback "insignificant."

Again, I think most are fine with the tunnels, as long as the expressing of ones self stays in the tunnels.

Re: Hold on to your hats ….
I was generally pro-Everts at first and even now I am was calling for her to be fired. I am also not all that upset she is leaving due to some missteps of late. I do fear for what may happen. WCU and ECU chancellor hires of a few years ago concern me.
My wife and I are both App grads and when we were moving in our oldest daughter to the top floor of White Hall in 2014 Everts was visiting and we were the very first App alums she met that day. Clearly that was early on in her tenure at App but she was engaging and gave me good vibes.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

Bigger than the tunnels, IMO, was the 911 Center scheme. When your own BOT criticizes the move in a public meeting you're in, that's really bad. That BOT rebuke was a month ago.

Also, for those not aware, Everts hasn't lived in the Chancellor's House for over a year. She lives primarily in Hickory. That was never announced or publicized, more of an open secret in Boone.
There's also the Indoor Practice Facility bonds, which are needed to start work. The UNC BOG paused passing those bonds after a January presentation where no athletics officials were present. That's gonna delay the completion.
Then there's people who just never liked her because she's not Ken Peacock or his personality type, or they saw her as left-leaning because she increased minority enrollment.

Re: Hold on to your hats ….
Well, I pushed back inasmuch as I wrote her a polite email explaining my disagreement with the plan. I guess I already knew she felt my opinion wasn't "significant" given that it didn't warrant so much as a form reply from her office. Didn't realize she said that part out loud.
(Just came across your letter to the editor in the Appalachian. Spot on IMHO.)

Re: Hold on to your hats ….
"Promises" were made on athletics facilities, which were never paid for. Maybe it was her fault, I honestly don’t know. But believing we had the funding for 105, the IPF, and the East side was never really. That anyone pushed back on putting those on the taxpayers...T-Dog wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 5:04 pmBigger than the tunnels, IMO, was the 911 Center scheme. Re: Hold on to your hats ….
Now Sherri was the CEO and didn’t make decisions on the fly without advice and guidance. The free expression tunnels morphed into hate tunnels, I blame the AppPolice for the bad 911 advice and the AD for the 105. Debacle. I detest our meddling legislature and their OlD Testament bent and the funding inequities in education. Everts came at a tough time and of my experience with Chancellor’s she is better than Wey, Thomas and Borkowski. Almost as much done under her admin as Ken’s. Cut her some slack and say an App prayer for her health.

I don't know, but she never embraced Boone and never became invested in the community. That's actually my only real complaint about her.

Re: Hold on to your hats ….
Given the makeup of the N.C. Board of Governors, I’m not optimistic we’ll see a home run hire. Their track record of late is dubious.
