"Currently ASU's average room rental rate is $4,570, which is the sixth lowest in the UNC system. A 4 percent annual increase would bring that rate up to $6,106 in 2024-25."

Good grief. I had no idea that dorm rooms went for that much much nowadays. My daughter and son-in-law may have to sell their 20K camper and put a second mortgage on their house to afford my grandson's tuition and fees at App next year. :o

Think about this. When I went ASTC in 1960, I had to pay $750.00 per YEAR!! Was still a struggle.

\My freshman year, I paid $887.00 for the year. That included all fees, room, great meals in the cafeteria, laundry by the University, book rental, etc. Still had to have a scholarship and two loans though. I didn't even have to pay for transportation home...I hitch hiked. Hitch hiking got me home faster than the Trailways bus.

Those were wild west days in some parts of Watauga and western Wilkes. Iron City and Old Milwaukee were 25¢ house beer specials for mostly penniless college kids at Joe's Friendly Tavern at the Wilkes-Watauga county line on 421. The joint was owned and operated by E. J. Trivette, a part-time NASCAR driver. He was a big, burly bull of a man. He ruled his bar with muscle and a loaded Colt 45--that he'd pull out if things got too roudy around the tables, the pin-ball machines and in the parking lot.

Things have changed, to say the least!

Oh, and BUMP! We're gettin' in the weeds here! Back to Winkler. ;)
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

When the old building was demoed, the original piles were left in place and surveyed with the idea of possibly reusing them as part of the new foundation design. Not sure why the can't go taller. Engineering firm involved may not find the old piles suitable for new structure.
