Re: Tenn Game Plan
One of my concerns is how well are we going to handle UT's hurry up tempo. I watched some of the Outback Bowl and that is when Northwestern seemed to have trouble stopping UT. That was one area where we struggled last year when teams decided to pick up the pace (i.e. Clemson, stAte, Troy). This is where our solid D started to give up plays. We need to still make those stops and get them off the field when UT goes up tempo.

If I coached a team that could play up tempo hurry up I would absolutely play that way. No brainier.AtlAppMan wrote:One of my concerns is how well are we going to handle UT's hurry up tempo. One comment I would make is that App is more athletic than that Northwestern team was.AtlAppMan wrote:One of my concerns is how well are we going to handle UT's hurry up tempo. I also don't expect to see Josh Dobbs on designed runs very often. They cannot afford for him to get hurt on a play like that in a game like this.

You likely will not, but honestly it isn't usually the designed runs that make him dangerous. Dobbs seems to improvise better than execute reads many times.Goapps15 wrote:One comment I would make is that App is more athletic than that Northwestern team was.AtlAppMan wrote:One of my concerns is how well are we going to handle UT's hurry up tempo. It is this sort of thing that makes him extremely dangerous, coupled with his ability to be a surprisingly powerful runner. He is difficult to bring down, surprisingly agile and quick, and has great balance. Honestly, I wish he'd come in as a receiver or running back. He makes our offense click for sure, but whether or not his inconsistency in the passing game is on him or the coaches, the debate about that rages on.
Fumbled TD Run
Versus Kentucky
Versus Alabama
Edit: I guess I should add that he has shown flashes of brilliance in the passing game, like vs. UGA last year and vs. South Carolina the year before, but sometimes it feels the coaches try to keep him in the pocket and he always seems to do better when the pocket moves.

I am from Knoxville and have watched several games in the Dobbs era. He is definitely best when things break down. He is not a pocket passing qb and UT is better when he moves around. I just don't think they will want him trying to power people over vs App.

Re: Tenn Game Plan
Absolutely.
If it becomes necessary though, he will do it. However, I expect us to try and use the run game and keep it plain.
Do you guys have any good clips to illustrate what I should be looking for in your offense? All I have to go on last year was your bowl game.

We were limping into the bowl game with something like 17 starters on both sides of the ball were injured / out

Re: Tenn Game Plan
up tempo definitely was a problem for our D last year. Too bad we aren't as up tempo on offense as we were in 2007. Our D would be forced to defend that style. That being said, Woody seems to be very good at making necessary adjustments and I expect that to be less of an issue this year. At least I hope so, because we will see it again from Troy.

Below is excerpt from GoVols247.
Interesting.
But players and coaches alike have said they haven’t addressed Appalachian State’s most memorable upset of a major program nearly a decade ago despite the fact that two of Tennessee’s assistant coaches, offensive coordinator Mike DeBord and defensive line coach Steve Stripling, were on Michigan’s staff in 2007.

To be honest, a lot of us were baffled by the hire of Debord considering how long he was out of the game before the hire. It really looked like a buddy hire by Jones. Granted, it has not given us a better passing game (that could be on Coach Zach Azzani, or Dobbs may just not have it in him), but it did give us the second best rushing attack in the SEC last year.
I am hoping Debord and Stripling don't start having flashbacks mid game.
