Yeah I agree. So much talent just goes to waste in the portal.
I hope that in the future guys don't enter the portal unless they have a good idea about their outcome.

Guys who have not proven scuat are not our problem and often may be a soulution. It is the guys who have proven themselves who are our problem, and will continue to be a problem.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
Some guys just want to transfer. In order to do that and continue to compete they must enter the portal. Non-athletes transfer every semester, no portal requirement for them though.

We don't spend the money and time on the non-athletes that we do on the athletes.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
I know I will never know, but I would like to know how academics affect the portal entries and exits. Are we worried about the grades if they are only playing one year? Can we bring a student in with bad grades who has no intentions of having a college degree just to play ball for a year? I guess it would affect our overall g.p.a for the team. Can anyone shed light on how App Football staff views the academic side of the portal?

Pretty sure the rules specify that transfers have to be on a path to graduate.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2024 11:23 pmI know I will never know, but I would like to know how academics affect the portal entries and exits. Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
Hap is correct. Any player, whether it be an App player or otherwise can only enter the portal if they are in good standing. As far as what we pursue in the portal, the credit hours that transfer in makes a difference. An athlete has to maintain a certain # of credit hours based on class to participate. For example, a third year player has to have successfully completed 60 hours to be eligible as a third year. If they were to transfer to a school that did not honor or transfer all of those credit hours earned, and they fell below the 60 hour threshold, then they aren’t eligible at the new school.hapapp wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 5:50 amPretty sure the rules specify that transfers have to be on a path to graduate.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2024 11:23 pmI know I will never know, but I would like to know how academics affect the portal entries and exits. Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
I love football and I will still say that’s a real crazy thing to think about. An institution of higher learning spends more time and money on athletes than on those focused solely on academics. I can tell you it’s true. I know a student who entered App with a 4.0 gpa and a great SAT score and left App after 2 semester with a 4.0 GPA. She also had 4 close relatives who graduated from App. App didn’t do so much as to make a single contact to see if they could retain her as a student or to inquire as to why she was leaving. Poor priorities.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
I do wonder if there is an exit experience survey done of students leaving ( except those flunking out)

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
Interesting question and idea. Coaches and players discuss it but I don’t know if there is a formal “exit interview” for those leaving.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
I may have posted this before, but I truly believe kids showing up to AppState without the adequate clothing for cold weather plays a role in whether someone likes AppState.
The cold is easy to deal with if you have the right gear/clothing but if you are walking around in a lot of cotton without waterproof/windproof clothing/shoes
you are going to be miserable.
It should be in our brochures for new students.

One of our kids who went on to the NFL , for a couple of seasons, literally showed up to campus with his belongings in a couple of plastic grocery bags. We outfitted him as best we could within the confines of the rules back then. Some of these guys come from absolutely nothing.

Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
That is so true. I think with Wright it was more about it being hurried than the fact he brought so little. Some people can handle the cold a lot better as well. Some people wear shorts in the snow or at least when it is in the 40s while some people bundle up if it is just 65 degrees.Stonewall wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2024 9:49 amOne of our kids who went on to the NFL , for a couple of seasons, literally showed up to campus with his belongings in a couple of plastic grocery bags. Re: Another Portal Loss and Portal Discussion
Pretty sure I ruined 2 good pairs of sneakers my first semester at App before I got some boots and a heavy coat for Christmas that year. Even though I grew up in the WNC mountains, I wasn't prepared for the duration of Boone's winter weather. I could handle a day or two of snow, sleet, and wind- not the entire months of December, January, and February.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2024 8:23 amI may have posted this before, but I truly believe kids showing up to AppState without the adequate clothing for cold weather plays a role in whether someone likes AppState.
