Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
We have some well-traveled fans on the board.
What are your top five road game experiences win or lose and what are your worst five trips?
Best:
- Michigan
- 1st National Title vs. UNI
- South Carolina, in-laws hosted a great tailgate
- Penn State, great fans even though we lost
- First Bowl game vs. Ohio, great ending to our first bowl
HM - Montana - never been treated as well by other fans
Worst:
- 2004 Wyoming - butt whooping and ranked in the bottom five weather for a game ever
- 2004 GS - rough year
- 2007 Wofford, hot and a hurt AE, was painful watching them storm the field
- 2009 ECU, I guess I just hate the hot games
- 2011 VT, allegedly

Only one worst experience, 1982 game where Virginia Tech beat App 34-0 in Lane Stadium. Tech fans were obnoxious and aggressive. Our wives were frightened and we left the game early.

Re: Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
My first time going to CCU in 2022 was miserable. I did not realize there was an entrance on the visitor side. Crammed like sardines for 15 minutes walking up a ramp and through the student section was a nightmare. Adding in the long concession wait times, losing Trey Cobb for the season and the loss made it worse that night.
I have learned from that mistake and look forward to a better experience this November.
My best experience has been at UNC. The communication from the athletics office regarding parking, shuttles and free water within the stadium helped.

Best experience is a tie between LSU and Penn State. Tailgating at 3:00 am in Baton Rouge is awesome. Penn State was an all around good weekend.
No bad experiences watching App play.

I'll rate the national championships as the best; particularly the last one.
The worst were Marshall in '95 (even though we won), my one and only time ever going to the Stink, and a monsoon game at Eastern Kentucky sometime in the late 90s.

Would have preferred the LSU game in '08 actually have been at the normal kickoff time and therefore less hot. ECU also too hot.
Enjoyed both NC games I made it to in '06 and '07.

Penn State top best; the national champs next; the Unc win. Doc wouldn’t clear me for travel to Michigan or it would be #1.

Worst - Georgia Southern about 20 years ago - NOTHING ELSE COMES CLOSE - We vowed that day to NEVER GO BACK to that shithole

Re: Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
06 and 07 championships were an absolute blast being my freshman and sophomore year.
Sat in the Delaware section was incredible since we whooped them as bad as we did.
South Carolina is the only other road game (outside of an Elon and citadel game) I’ve experienced. Got tickets through work and sat with the SC faithful. There were 2 guys behind us that had nothing but great things to say and overall, the fans were welcoming.

Re: Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
Best was the Drinkwitz season win at UNC. Great seats and the Carolina fans in front of us saying how the ASU fans were the best visiting fans they had seen. I also liked the free cold water stations around the stadium.
Next were the two Nattys I was able to attend in Chattanooga. Nice town/area with lots to see and do. And seeing AE outplay a future Super Bowl winning QB was awesome!
Next comes a game at Western back in 88 or 89. Lots of friends along for the trip and Cullowhee was interesting.
Lastly was the Boca Raton Bowl a couple of years ago. Sure, it was a loss but perfect weather in December and good friends to enjoy the trip with.
I have no “worsts” since any time I can see the Mountaineers play is a good day.

Away at USCjr was the best.
Home v JMU was my worst (still had a great time at Ale though after the game)

Re: Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
Best: National Championship games, Wyoming '23 (except for the L)
Worst: U of Florida
Regarding the Stink, I've been to Statesboro for 6 App games or so. I've even sat in the Eagles Nest in 2006 (William Mayfield down the middle!) while wearing my App gear as a guest of a judge from Augusta. I figured he knew I was App and that he would respect my commitment to my school. He did. I met another App in there who was too shy to wear his App gear. While having bottle caps thrown at me many times in the lot, it was all in fun and I never really felt in danger.

Re: Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
Best for me -
Penn State and Texas A&M.
Penn State - we sat 50 yard line with the Penn State crowd.. super nice...When Moore broke the tackle heading for end zone, I am yelling..fall down, fall down....the Penn State fan behind me was yelling...let him score, let him score...we looked at each other and started laughing.
Texas A&M - because it got us GameDay. For the game, we were in App. St. section right under the over-hang...so the sun was not a problem...a couple of the A&M students were a little obnoxious...it was great to get the win...

Tennessee, Georgia and Texas A&M all had great gameday experiences. Concord was bad and Conway is just stupid. Both reminded me of Elon for some reason. Bunch of mouthy little kids.

Re: Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
Hard to say definitive best or worst but here are some of my highlights/lowlights. I love road tripping for away games. It’s one of my favorite fall pastimes.
Best:
JMU ‘23 -college gameday and all the hype
2017 Mobile, Dollar General Bowl - the USS Alabama was incredible and worth the trip alone
Penn State - game was amazing minus the outcome and visited Fallingwater and Gettysburg along the way
South Carolina - still IMO the best App Nation has ever represented as a visiting fan base. We absolutely took that stadium over in the 4th quarter.
Worst:
GaSo 2018 - generally enjoy making the trip to Savannah for this game, but this one was by far the worst. Their students didn’t even watch the game, the whole section was just giving us the finger and yelling “f*** App State” in between chanting Mo Bamba every 5 minutes. It was a weird one.
Honestly, don’t have many bad road experiences and I’ve probably been to more away games than most, but I’m also not a trash talker. If somebody tries to get a rise out of me, I ignore them.

When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

Re: Off Season Topic - Best/Worst Road Game Experiences
Haven't been to a lot of road games, but if we're counting bowl games, both Montgomery trips were a lot of fun, and both New Orleans trips were great (albeit '18 was considerably more fun than '19). 2018 New Orleans was my favorite road trip ever.
I was at the wins at UNC and South Carolina, and both were certainly amazing feelings in the stadium.
Less memorable, but I made a long weekend of it when we played at ODU in 2015. Mostly bad weather, but we got one nice beach day, and definitely enjoyed the absolute laugher of a game.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. As proof, allow me to point to App/JMU @ KBS back in 2022.
Talk about no joy in Mudville…
