One more time - It's Western
Appalachian State and Cullowhee Community College have played football 77 or so times dating back to 1932.
ASU won the first game 20-0 and has gone on to win 58 more times. Since 1985 the Cantamount's have only won twice. The game's were fairly evenly split from 1965 to 1985 with the purple kitties actually taking 13 of their 19 victories during that span.
My favorite is still the 1978 game. They were playing for a piece of, if not the outright conference championship. Game was in the 'whee and on regional ABC TV. They were supposed to win. There was a soccer game at Clemson the next day so a couple of us left Boone that morning on a weekend road trip. Brand new credit card in tow, cooler full of red ringer sammiches and other refreshments, we were off.
They were supposed to win and well, it wasn't even close. Let's just say it was a great day to visit the suburbs of Sylva.
Since this may be our last time, what is your best CCC memory?

Re: One more time - It's Western
As an 85 grad I'm embarrassed to say my class never beat them during our 4 years. For some reason I never went to the game and the first one I ever went to was the 2007 beat down. I went to the road games in '08 and '10. In 2010 I had gotten home on the red eye from Oakland that morning after week of work out there and went up to the game with the group. I think it was that game that the Western students were wearing shirts that said on the front. Want a crAPPY school... and on the back it said, There's an APP for that.
Re: One more time - It's Western
OK, my most memorable trip to the 'Whee was in '04 (I think). It was Richie Williams' Junior season, among other things. Wife & two sons (9 & 11) were with me. Wife had a head cold. Weather was awful, very windy, rain, & temps in the low 50s. Wind was blowing so hard, that rain was coming down sideways & coming in through the seams of my raingear. (If I have the year wrong, it may have been '02.)
Now, we were prepared for the weather. But, even then, wife announced about half-time that she had had enough & was going to listen to the rest of the game in the car. She looked at the boys & asked if they wanted to come with her. They looked at her like she was crazy!!! The three of us stayed through the entire game.
I don't really remember the game, and I think (if I have the year right) we lost after being up initially.
However, the BEST part about that game & the rain & the experience, was that when I got home, I posted on Any Given Saturday about that experience & my boys' determination to stay for the ENTIRE game.
The NEXT poster on AGS made my day. All he said was: "Raised em right". Yep, I did.

I love these quote by Julian and Armanti.
“For us, winning ‘The Jug’ was expected. For them, it made their season. But it’s why rivalry games are fun.”
… Julian Rauch, a kicker at Appalachian State from 2004 to 2007
“It’s going to be different, you know, not playing for ‘The Jug.’ We’ll just have to make new rivalries in the new conference.”
… Cleveland Browns receiver Armanti Edwards

2010 for me. I was still a student employee and was filming the game from atop the WCU scoreboard in the Whee'. The WCU video guy INSISTED I wear a harness that was way too small for me, which sucked, but I enjoyed watching DP demolish the faux rival.
After the game Kenepa told me how much he liked beating the Can'ts. He said they were the dirtiest team we play. I was like, "even Elon?" He said yes.

1985 was my first year at App!! I've been able to talk a lot of smack to my Western friends over the past 28 years....Apptiger wrote:Since 1985 the Cantamount's have only won twice.

Interesting that Julian called it a "rivalry" while it seems most of the members on this MMB don't consider it one.

Nope, this was 2006 when App won 31-9 and yes, it rained VALLIES that first half in Cullowhee. 04 was the last time they won the Jug.AppAlum1 wrote:OK, my most memorable trip to the 'Whee was in '04 (I think). Without looking it up, thinking '92, winner goes to playoffs as at large.

Re: One more time - It's Western
The weather in '95 and an early Satterfield TD over the top to Otis Smith? was one my favorite memories. Stopped by Trivette to dry off and warm up. My Dad still talks about the misery to this day. The easy win helped us get over it. I remember feeling sorry for the players. One of my favorite teams, 11-0! A few weeks later I remember walking up the stairs to the bookstore and seeing a big banner with "12-0, 3 to go" but SFA got us. One of my favorite teams, my senior year. So proud of my Apps, I'll never forget that season. Also remember listening to the catch at Citadel on the radio with my roommate at Brown Heights apts. Final knee by Satterfield in the 24-22 win at Wake after being up 24-0 at half. So many good memories in '95.
