A friend that was sitting with his family behind the bench on the east side told me that the CCU players and coaches were not very nice.
No way!! That's so unlike them! *sarcasm*

It doesn't seem like we have anywhere near the talent we had several years ago. It feels like we are in full rebuild mode. In some ways, that's to be expected.
This is what I don't understand about many of the comments right now. This is an entirely new coaching staff with a huge number of transfer players. A transition like this takes time to gel and build. Compared to this time last year, App looks better. There are numerous areas that need improvement, but we are seeing improvements in most of those areas every week. We are in rebuild mode, but the foundations look pretty solid.

I agree with the above. We are moving the ball this year. Our skill group room looks improved (even with the boneheaded drops). We also have a ton of young guys at that position. Even the OL looks better.

The defense needs most of the work. We lost like 4-5 DL/DT over the past year along with our whole LB room. Transfers have helped cover some holes but we've still got some guys that just aren't high level FBS dudes. It'll take another year or two for DLo to get his guys.

A peer, JMU, went 9-4 last year during a "rebuild." Yeah, we beat them, but they didn't have any embarrassing losses (with perhaps the exception of ULM). What's our excuse? Yeah, we were significantly outmatched in Boise and have been plagued by self-inflicted mistakes in all three losses. But plenty of coaches in the NIL/Transfer Portal-era have excelled in Year One.

What improvement are we seeing week-to-week? Seems like we took a few steps forward (Oregon State/GaSt games), but took a huge step backward on Saturday. A good team, not even a great one, should not have lost that game. We shouldn't have to be up three scores to feel confident about pulling out the win.

It seems from the outside that, as the kids say, our coaching staff couldn't read the room ahead of this game. Coastal has owned us for the past several years, they talked their s*** before Saturday, and then embarrassed us at homecoming. How many App players stood around and watched as Coastal tried to plant their flag on our field?

I think most will agree the App rebuild and the JMU rebuild are not comparable. I think we were SUBSTANTIALLY more degraded in terms of talent than JMU was when each new coach took over. Another point some have made and should not be overlooked is that DLo had very little time and certainly few resources to assist him from time he was hired until the 2024 recruiting class (HS and portal) wrapped. He could realistically only get a fraction of what was needed into that class at best. Thus we need to see what he can really do in a full cycle.

75% of the players started running to the fieldhouse as soon as the clock hit zero!!

The difference was that JMU was in the process of getting better each year and winning... We were regressing each year and losing. Coaches coming in after a big winning year have faired well here. We look at the first year of Satterfield and we went 4-8. That was after taking over for Coach Moore (who's last two yearw were 8-4) and starting the FBS process. The next year he was 7-5. The next year 11-2..... Satt's last year we were 11-3 and then Drink comes in and goes 12-1. Then Coach Clark comes in.... 9-3, 10-4, 6-6, 9-5, 5-6.... You have to give Dlo a chance to get a full good year of recruiting in and learning App State. Next year will be the tell all for us.

I know DLo had very little time, but I really thought with the many years of NFL coaches on the team, they would find something in the guys that wasn't pulled out last year. It appears that isn't happening at all. On paper, we have the best WRs in the Sunbelt, period!! But.... they keep dropping the easy damn throws.

Or it could be they have pulled something out of these guys because it could have been worse.....

But if this is true — that it could have been worse but the coaches have coached success out of the team — it's an indictment on either: The coaches (because they missed on talent recruitment out of the portal) or the state of the program (that we can't land the talent that we're used to seeing on our team).

It a brave new world my brothers. Way too early to tell how we are navigating this journey. I’ve suddenly become patient.

They got into the portal late because of the late hire. That's why I'm not hard on them this year. Now next year we best see some improvement.

Not one player’s participates in the buglers dream pointing any longer, it took half a season to kill a tradition. DL may be fine on the field longterm, but the small changes to the program off the field are starting to add up from a fan perspective.
I put that on the administration as much as the coaching staff. Someone has to make it clear that certain things are part of our tradition no matter what. That message also has to go to the Game Ops folks who coordinate everything, and to the band to make sure they know to play it every time we kickoff.
Believe me when I say the band not knowing when to play it isn't a problem. We do. In fact, we queue it up after ever touchdown. We never get the green light to play it though. They almost always opt for canned music instead
I didn't mean that to come across as a critique of the band. I know they only play when given the go ahead, but someone has to let the band know they'll be allowed to play for each kickoff. I don't mind canned music some, but I'd much rather have the band play most times.
And, of course, the band only needs to play when WE kick off. The canned music can blast whatever it wants when we receive kicks.

Also, we are not a Power school that can remake it's roster in one year via NIL(Heels not a good example 😂😂). I agree it takes multiple years. Some say D is not better than prior years in some respects, yes. For example, not getting to QB.. However, we had Johnson and Hooper in the lineup. In other cases, I do believe their are signs of improvement. It may not show in actual results (which is where it ultimately matters).
Hopefully not a rebuild in the off-season and we can add some good players.
With that said, let's win some games and go bowling.

It’s just embarrassing to lose to Conway College four years in a row. That’s roughly 1,460 days of their gloating. Given we had a substantial second half lead and blew it , all the worse.
