Moving on to Liberty

Son called and he has a tree down on his house up above stadium drive. Large tree down blocking road to get out, no power. Kids are getting a bit scared I’m sure. Game is secondary right now guys.

I've seen multiple reports of massive flooding, trees down, impassible roads etc... I'm in Charlotte and was planning to drive up tonight but the bridge across the New River to our cabin is flooded. Hoping to come up tomorrow and can bring a generator if your son needs to borrow it?

He and a friend walked to another house and while they were there a tree fell on that house and came through the roof. They made it too some apartments

I’ve scrolled through a few threads after the Thursday night shit show and haven’t seen it talked about yet, so here is my question….

The defense looks exactly like it looked the first half of last year before the staff realized it was too complex and they didn’t have the best players on the field. For someone with more knowledge of the “x’s and o’s” than me, is that the case? Our guys looked like they were standing around wondering what they should do instead of reacting and playing ball. That’s EXACTLY how it looked last year until they went to the Star package.

Question 2 - if that’s the case why does Sloan continue to try implementing complex defenses at the start of the year instead of adding to simpler schemes as the year progresses and kids know their positions? I know only Sloan can answer that but it keeps running through my head

We might be playing the vaunted STAR defense that worked well for us last year...it's just not working this year.

The STAR worked so well last year because EJ Jackson was aggressive, experienced and could cover + tackle. Avarion Cole has not been able to cover so far and seems to be more reactive than proactive in run defense. There were several runs against South Al where he was looking in the backfield but never actually moved and just got pushed back by an OL. Cole does seem to be a good tackler, he just doesn't look comfortable right now so I believe there is run for improvement from him.

I noticed that. Cahari Haynes also got caught in the wrong gap on a run and even ran into his teammate flowing to one side instead of trusting his teammate and sticking to his own gap.


There is a ton of youth playing on defense right now. And that’s a problem with the odd front defense. You get just two injuries at nose and now you’re effectively screwed unless you make some schematic changes.

Who are these youth you speak of? Outside of Haynes and Hertz

While thin due to injuries, We’re pretty experienced on D. Some of these guys have been playing college football for 5-6 years.
Fletcher, Collins, Kelly, KAV, Harrington, TD, Sullivan, Clarke, Farmer. And a few others 3-4 years.

Those are all starters. App rotates in two and three deep on defense and at times there are far more than one or two underclassmen playing. Wyatt, Hopper, Freshman DT, Haynes, etc. At one point against ECU there were three redshirt freshmen that converged on Garcia for a sack. The only upper classman involved was Collins.
