Re: Coldest Football Game in Boone
Coldest without precip was the New Hampshire playoff overtime game up there. A cold front moved through during the first quarter and you could really feel it.I was so cold when we won that I jumped the cable around the field and jumped in Drips arms. (Did I just say that?)
I think the first Montana game would have been the coldest game ever if we had played at night. It was around 38 during the game and snowed a little before the start but only lasted about 30 minutes. I was sitting in the front of the bus going back to Helena (we had to fly in and out there because of the possible weather coming), The driver told me to watch the outside temp on the console gauge. He said there was a dry, to start with, cold front coming and it was strong. In about 15 minutes (20-25 miles) the temp went from about 30 to 8, then kept going down. 40 miles and it was -4. The skies were clear and I will never forget how clear the stars were. It was big sky country that night.

I was at that game, I had just graduated from high school. It was against East Carolina. The streaker in question was sitting (originally) about 15 rows in front of my friend Robin and I. He was drinking what appeared to be PJ. Everytime ECU would do something good he would stand up and boooo, and cheer when App made a good play. lol My dad was on the rescue squad at the time, he was on duty at the game (he always helped during home games with the ambulance service). He helped ASU Security arrest the dude. Anyway, according to my father that fella was strong as a bull. It took four personnel to take him down, hand cuff him, and put him in the police car. true lolappstate77 wrote:I remember the streaker. Ran right behind the drum line which I was on. I wasn't at the first Montana game, but the one I went to, It was 0 degrees at the kickoff and -20 with the wind chill.....cold but fun....Robert Norton wrote:Coldest without precip was the New Hampshire playoff overtime game up there. Another very very cold game was the playoff game against Western Kentucky (at WKU). Snowed the entire day and before the game I came down with the flu. I didn't have fun during the game or the LONG DRIVE back to NC after (we won).

Re: Coldest Football Game in Boone
That GSU playoff game in 1987 was without a doubt the coldest game I have ever attended in Boone. I am very thankful that all of my friends & I had plenty of anti-freeze in us that day. Seems like we did at all games no matter what the temperature (or sport for that matter), but it was very much needed on that cold December day in Boone

Give Em Hell!!
Re: Coldest Football Game in Boone
November 1995 against CCC was by far the most miserable -- not even a close second. It was freezing cold and absolutely pouring down rain. Satterfield hit a long pass down the middle to put us up early and stay there. I felt so bad for those players out there. I remember stopping at Trivette to dry off and warm up on the way out. I couldn't have made it back to the apartment without that little break. Never forget it.

Ah, the 1995 flogging of the cantamounts. It was the only home game I skipped my four years at ASU. My girlfriend didn't want to go, and she laid out a compelling argument for us to...ummm...stay home.AppAttack wrote:November 1995 against CCC was by far the most miserable -- not even a close second. This was the coldest one I had been to personally... The only game I ever left early. I took off at the end of the 3rd quarter (game was pretty much in hand), and immediately went to the restaurant in Trivette to defrost. I ate there and listened to the 4th quarter on the radio they had playing the restaurant.
Cold alone isn't terrible, but when you have cold and steady precipitation... that's pure misery.

The 1987 playoff game against Richmond was pretty darn cold. I seem to remember the field having snow and ice on it similar to the game the following week against Georgia Southern. Richmond had trouble crossing the 50 yard line and even punted on third down a couple of times. The APPS won 20-3 with 4,138 BLACK AND GOLD BLEEDING FANS in attendance!!!!!

The coldest game I can recall was in the early 90s, I think 1990. We were playing Mississippi College and it was homecoming. I remember a cold icy day. The least attended homecoming game I can remember. But the Southern Illinois and western Kentucky games are a close second. As far as wind and cold the first playoff game against Maine was pretty miserable.

Re: Coldest Football Game in Boone
I was at this game also as a student. I remember walking over and it was almost balmy. I had watched the weather and knew it was going to change and took a backpack with heavy gear in it. I believe it was homecoming, and I can remember the girls riding around the track blue lipped and teeth chattering. Temps dropped like 30 degrees very quickly...appstate77 wrote:I am thinking of two games, the aforementioned Stink game...I was there with my son. In Boone it was snowy and blizzard like. Brownie was the QB and threw a memorable TD pass to our, now, Assoc AD Rick Beasley in the North Endzone.
When the game started the stands were full, over 18k. When the blizzard hit mid second qtr., the students ran for the dorms much like they do in the 3rd and 4th qtrs today.
By the end of the game, which we lost BTW, there may have been 500 people left in, then snowy Conrad Stadium. I and fellow band mate and former the director of the BOD Jay Jackson were two of them.

One game to consider for honorable mention has to be the first Maine playoff game (early 2000's ) when it was in the 20's or 30's with a 45 mph wind during most of the game. Our punter actually made a punt for negative yardage. Joe Burchette was miserable all game as he tried to time passes and routes with let ups in the wind.

Re: Coldest Football Game in Boone
I remember that game well. I remember my girlfriend leaving before halftime and sittingl in one of the dorms near the stadium for the rest of the game. I went out to my car and got a down sleeping bag from the trunk, stuck my feet in it and pulled it up to my neck. The snow was blowing sideways and the TV crews were having trouble keeping the cameras upright in the wind. We had driven up from Hilton Head and ended up going into Boone and buying extra cloths after the game as we were not prepared for the storm...it was in the 70's on HHI when we left. Man I love outdoor football!!!appstate77 wrote:I am thinking of two games, the aforementioned Stink game...I was there with my son. AHHHHHHHH, YEEESSSSSS!!!! THE STREAKER!!!!! I was in the drum line that year--and you're right it was Western! I remember so well as we marched off the field after our show towards the home stands how the crowd went INSANE! I recall thinking, "well, we were GOOD--but THAT GOOD???" The streaker--naked as the day he was born--(and turned out he was from NEITHER SCHOOL!) ran from the scoreboard end zone behind our band and headed directly for the Kittymounts Band and their cast-of-thousands of majorettes! I think they had 15 or 20! It was like an episode of Keystone Cops with the campus police chasing him through all those girls, then through their band, eventually catching him and hauling him away. Our videographer caught the whole thing on tape! Hmmm...wonder where that tape is now?
Funny twist to this story : Protocol calls for the visiting band to perform first, but Western was NOTORIOUS for their halftime shows running well past the allotted time causing the home band to have to cut their show short, so our drum major had scouted them at another game prior to this one to check it out. After finding out that indeed their show WAS too long, he gave them notice as they got off their busses that WE would be going on FIRST! AND WE DID! HA!!!!!

We do Miss S!!! We have talked on appfan and chatted a few years back in the university bookstore

I also remember the loud cheer we got when we marched off the field. I knew we were good but then I saw the Campus Cops corralling the offender, wearing nothing but a smile, in the endzone.
Re: Coldest Football Game in Boone
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!! Great to know! Now give me a few more hints so I can figure out who you are. You were a drummer, too--right? Snare? Bass?
Yeah, unfortunately (or maybe it's FORTUNATELY?) I never actually saw the guy "in the flesh" if you'll pardon the obvious play on words. He was smack in the middle of the Western Band by the time I turned around to see what all the ruckus was about. I do remember seeing all their heads whip around as he ran through their ranks with the cops in hot pursuit....especially all those majorettes! He was probably the best looking guy they'd ever seen!
I only got to see him on the video...which, by the way, was used to CONVICT the guy in court! UUUUUUGGGGGLLLLYYYYYY!!!!

If you are referring to the game in 1974, it was East Carolina not west carolina.
Re: Coldest Football Game in Boone
I don't remember if our year was '74 but it WAS in the early/mid 70's. Maybe we're not talking about the same game. The WESTERN game is CLEARLY & INDELIBLY imbedded in my memory!

The game I attended in 74 was ECU. As far as the streaker is concerned, he is definately NOT INDELIBLY imbedded in my memory!
