He was the consistency that was lost. BUT remember this is a top 5 players list so this is all about the Individual not the team play. If you start throwing in all the ifs with injuries and all that kind of thing you could make arguments for a bunch of players. What ifs didn't happen. AE and Moore had all those AA blockers in front of them but couldn't manage to get there. Again with SS we still had him in 2008. The consistency was K-Rich and this is a list of individual players. None of the guys get on the list without the players around them.
Moore gained 1400 yards in 2009, and if Brian Quick had made the catch on the goal line, we would have beaten a very good Montana team, IN Montana, and been playing for another NC. Without Satterfield. You think Satterfield would have taken the ball out of AE's hands on the goal line?

Couldnt manage to get there? App was literally a few feet from another NC game, and through one of the toughest playoff road trips in the FCS.

In 2008 we had about 5 injured RBs to work with.

Again we cannot change the past with "IFs" all we can go on is what has been done. Would have, could have, should have, won't ever happen. We can speculate til the world ends but that doesn't change what happened. Would we be talking about Michael Jordan as the greatest of all time if he had gotten within a couple games of the trophy every year but fell short. the OP was asking who the top 5 players were in Apps history and I think K-Rich as a very strong resume because he was the consistency on those teams that was a magic that was lost when he left.
A few feet is still not getting there and they would have still had to win the NC game so again more speculation. We also don't know what SS would have done in that situation so thats more 20/20 hindsight speculation.

Still think KR i's over rated by some. If I could pick Richardson or Miller to have back next year, it'd be Miller, and an easy decision.

I really like Miller but there is no comparison with KR. No doubt he had better blocking but he was a more durable, consistent runner.

most career rushing yards, most rushing yards in a season, most all purpose yards, and most TD's in a single season.
I also find it no coincidence that after guys like hunter and murrell we kept winning NC's, After Richie left we kept winning, we had a number of great players come through but the magic really just seemed to stop when K-Rich graduated. SS was still here in 2008 when we lost as well so you can't pull the SS wasn't here card for the offense. Something really left when K-Rich graduated. Even the AE/quick combo couldn't keep things going.
Kevin Richardson is on any APP football list that I make as well, couldn't agree more about his value.

Some of you will remember the many times Corey Lynch helped pull a win out of the jaws of defeat. APP would have not won the first national championship had he not saved the day at EKU in 2006. EKU would have been a 4th loss and no playoffs

Brian Quick had the talent and could have been a star for any team in the nation.

Dexter Coakley was just a phenom.

Actually, the list need to be a "top ten" list

I am going beyond football to overall sports:

Armanti Edwards, football

Emmanuel Udogu, men's soccer

Darrell Robinson, men's basketball

Dexter Coakley, football

Valerie Whiteside, women's basketball

I'm surprised that some of the older folks haven't mentioned Larry Butler:

"Larry Butler is a former professional Canadian football offensive lineman who played six seasons in the Canadian Football League for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He played college football at Appalachian State University. He won the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award in 1981."
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

How about Rick Beasley?
How about French (Field Goal kicker)

Both were standouts in the early 80's

If you are talking about soccer there is no way to leave out Thompson Usiyan. If you are not from this era you need to google him and read about his accomplishments.
He may be the greatest athlete EVER at ASU.

I remember seeing "A French kick" so many times on the score board.

yes, it would show a goal post and a football going through it.
I'm not sure but I think he held some scoring records here at ASU even when we were not putting many TD's on the board back then...

If i remember correctly, that was about the high point of every game. Kind of like some of the panthers seasons.

That list would have to include Mary Jane Harrelson.

Appgrad mentioned Valerie Whitesides. It's my pleasure to let everyone know that her Dorman Lady Cavaliers played for a state championship this year but came up just short.

Her real championship accomplishment was her victory over cancer! She's wearing 'em out down there in Duncan, SC!!

The committee gets a lot of well-deserved criticism but I don't think it's fair to say they took the ball out of AE's hands. Hard to say what Coach Satterfield would have done but I'd have been surprised if it was a keeper with no option to pass. The ball was in AE's hands, he made the decision to pass and we missed another trip to Chattanooga by about an inch and a half. Tough break but I don't think it was a bad play call.
