The last thing any P4 wants is to be the first. It is like with Michigan and how their loss was the first of its kind and the fact that forever there is a rule in the AP Top 25 known as the App State rule because of that game. You can't blame them for not wanting that smoke. I just think it would be a lot more admirable and I would respect them if they admit it and would be willing to play us in BOA or some other neutral site once at least.
First to lose in Boone? Look I love APP football but let's get real. State losing in Boone would be news for about 24 hrs. Ask 1000 ACC fans how many times ACC teams have won in Boone and 999 wil have no idea and 999 will not care.
It does not have to be years long like Michigan to be something they want to avoid. It would be news for more than 24 hours though because they would suffer at work that week and they don't want that embarrassment. One thing it does is that it hurts recruiting a little bit. If App is a playoff team and beat NC State it really props App up more. They want to keep App in their rear view mirror as much as they can.
Movesbthe needle little to none. I would hope State is not making game opponent decisions based upon how their fans feel when they go to work. Otherwise, all four non-conferemce games would always be Campbell, West Carolina, Gardner Webb and South Carolina State...that has not been the case.
It doesn't impact recruiting especially in the NIL era. How many recruits has State lost to App. St.? Not many....if really any...
I get what you are saying and I am not saying we will beat them out most of the time just due to a win. It could sway a kid who gets an offer late from them to stay with us and would help get buzz in the state that would equate to interest from more players.
I also don't think they are making them based solely on fan decisions but their alumni are happy to not play us because they know we can beat them. I have no doubt that once word got out they agreed to play App that many boosters reached out to complain and demand they not come to Boone. They are afraid to lose a game that a loss hurts them way more than a win would help them. They have the same fears that Mack Brown expressed after our last game.
Money drives all decisions usually but this is one of the rare times that fear is driving a decision more.
Actually, it is fear of losing the money that NC State would make being in the college football playoff were they to get an invitation. A loss or a close game against App would torpedo their chances.
Basically, all of the current turmoil in college football is caused by being left out of this super league and the money to be made from said super league, that is driven by private equity firms who stand to make money from this NFL farm league.

They fear a loss for many reasons and that is definitely part of it as well. They definitely fear being left out of the super league for sure. A loss or close win does not help them and they know there is a good chance of that. The reality is there is no excuse for the game to be close but it likely would be.
