We are actually tied for third in the conference. We have grown 5% since 2016. Our expenses have grown 6%. We almost break even. We are losing about 100k-200k a year.

If you are willing to sift through the info, this site goes back to 2005 with athletic financial data for most universities out there. Really good info.
For total athletic budget, correct. But for football budget, we are near the bottom.

Only schools lower than us are the Georgia schools and ULM. This is of course using 2021 data and I know Georgia Southern increased their coaching salaries by 2 million this year so I would expect them to be higher than us as well.

Troy and Texas State are below as well.. so we are mid level.

In 2021 we spent $9,785,359 on football. The mean for the conference was $8,954,823.

That's because ULM is at 6.5. After reviewing the data again, we are mid tier. Georgia Schools, Troy, ULM, and Tx State below us. Everybody else ahead of us. As of 2021.

So if we get more donations, and we presumably pull more in ticket sales, concessions, merch, etc, how do we have a smaller football budget than our peers?

I realize that you are going to disagree with this, but the issues with the defense are fixed with talent not coaching. Our secondary is a mess with one position that is killing us right now and there isn’t an easy fix to it.

If you are talking about the current DC, I am curious to know exactly what is your issue with him? The defense, statistically speaking, is on par with the 2021 version that had 3 future NFL caliber players. Personally, I see no justifiable reason part ways with DJ, so enlighten me on what I am not seeing.
Let’s see… WKU, unc, JMU meltdown, 3rd down defense has got to be worse than ever, explosive plays are worse than ever, the stats are inflated by playing 2 bad FCS teams.
So you are expecting zero drop off in talent from top to bottom. We have a lot of issues that can be attributed to both misses in recruiting, (only one high school CB signee since 2018 is currently on this roster) and misses on talent due to guys not wanting to sit behind guys that are established starters with multiple years of eligibility left. Haven’t looked up 3rd down defense, but explosive plays are in large part due to poor angles taken by guys that are learning to play the position at the FBS level. That gets cleaned up in time and reps. I understand your frustration, but the coaches are responsible for getting guys in the right spots to make plays. They can’t make the plays for them.
They also coach guys to make plays. When it’s the 9th game and they’re not making plays… it’s a pattern.
And if you can’t recognize that it can be talent and are laying all on coaches then there isn’t much point in rationalizing with you.
If you can’t see that the lack of talent is a coaching issue, there’s no point in rationalizing with you.

Recruiting and developing talent is most of the job.

Long story short -- because it's taken this long to clean up Cobb's mess. If it weren't for COVID, it would have been cleaned up 2019 season.

Gillin does a tremendous job of balancing the budgets to make sure all sports can compete. The budgets are just now getting balanced which is why we see an increased spending in the Olympic sports.

I'd expect a large increase in football spending in the next 3-5 years -- possibly sooner.

Have you stepped outside of your disappointment and even considered that maybe the talent level of the players on defense peaked? Unless you can definitively tell me that each and every player is performing at less than they are capable then you can’t say that it is coaching and development. It’s safe to say that 9 games in to the season, we are what we are and that’s talent.

I am talking staff salaries to keep good coaches or poach good ones. We can’t expect really good coaches to stay for long when they are getting paid so little.

Not entirely true. The vote comes through season ticket purchases, game attendance and donations. I hear what you are saying, but my main point is you will never make everyone happy.

While true coaches recruit talent, hows our position coach turnover been? That makes a HUGE impact. We have some studs in the secondary waiting to play but we need to redshirt them to get the classes back to balanced. Drink messed with the balanced classes, then add in the Covid year, and our classes are all messed up. Next year, they'll be back to balanced but we must keep a lot our recruits redshirted.

At Alabama, you can play the best player regardless of year. At a school like App, you have to play the best unit and develop the talent. That's what we're doing. Everyone within the department knew all along this would be a rebuild year. Nobody was expecting it to be this bad, but nobody expected it to be a 2019 type year.

Now that 2024 season though....

How much (games, quarters, whatever) can a redshirt play before losing their shirt?

You really have no clue. And that’s ok. Your comments and opinions are clearly made out of frustration over something that you can’t control with no cogent thought. Enjoy your pit of misery. You are beyond help.

Man, reading this thread makes wonder just how terrible Drink and Cobb were. Sounds like they are responsible for this years’ disappointment.

How much (games, quarters, whatever) can a redshirt play before losing their shirt?
1 play equals a game played. They can play four games and keep their red shirt.
